Nope. Logic-level current's miniscule, and not enough to do that.

It simply won't pass TX and RX signals correctly, nor will the driver be able to properly check voltage on the wire to see if it's safe to put a packet on the wire.

change the gateways to be that of the other computer, and change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

(NOTE: Setting the gateway to that of the other machine isn't really necessary, but it ensures any and all traffic goes to the other system).

Using the appropriate settings widget in Windows, I'd imagine. Since I primarily work with large-scale Unices, I don't know it off the top of my head. but if you open your "network connections" folder, click on the one for your interface, click properties, highlight TCP/IP settings, and then select properties, it should get you to a screen where you can change them.

That's from my very faulty memory, tho.

make sure

make sure you dont have any software firewalls on ANY of the pcs. (which is why you may not be able to ping). also, make sure the winxp box doesnt have the little firewall (built in) running either.

It won't allow me to change the subnet mask. I have the firewall disabled. I still can't connect...

You probably need to change the network value as well, then.

If it still won't let you, just set the IPs, gateway, and netmasks as I mention above.

Hopefully, you had both set for DHCP, which would mean they're both now in the 169.254.0.0/16 range.

However, just post the IPs and gateways. From there, we can tell you what to change.

Or, just go ahead and set them in the following manner:

Machine 1:
IP: 10.1.1.2
Gateway: 10.1.1.3
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Network: 10.1.1.0

Machine 2:
IP: 10.1.1.3
Gateway: 10.1.1.2
netmask: 255.255.255.0
Network: 10.1.1.0

Then, they should see each other.

Also, make SURE you're using a crossover cable.
It won't let me set the netmask to that...it says the first number has to be between 1 and 223
