Wireless Router as a Wireless Adapter?

Is there a wireless router that will also let me use itself as a wireless nic? - the notebook will be connected to it via a regular ethernet cable.

I have a linksys b router and looked in the firmware for options related to this but couldn't find any. I heard someone say that you need to set the router to a "client mode".

Is there any router/firmware that will allow me to do this? I would like to take advantage of those powerful antennas (yes I know I can make my own antennas-that's not the issue here)

Not all routers have that capability. I know the D-links do but you need to hit your routers manual or website support area and check up on your models capabilities.

You are right, its called "client mode", so it shouldn't take that much effort to find out if your router supports or has that feature.

Peace.

I dunno about using a wireless router as a wireless adapter, but some older wireless routers actually use a PCMCIA card inside of it

Ok, thanks. I'll check the manuals of other router models.

Has anyone tried this out?

may i suggest the Asus WL-330g access point?
it can also work in ad hoc mode as a wireless nic

it gives wifi to my laptop while my desktops remain wired

the feature for that is called wireless bridge. why not just buy a WLAN card?

I have a mini-pci card but when I'm in the living room of my city apartament I am not picking up my friend's (or other) signal across the street. The signal in the bedroom is great. So I would like to put the router there and run an ethernet cable from it to the living room and the laptop would pick up the signal.

I don't want to buy a repeater or a stronger antenna if I already have a router that is capable of this.

ANY wireless router can be used as a wireless NIC/bridge. Any single one. So long as the router is hosting the wireless network.

If the router isn't hosting it, there are a few options, like setting it up in meshed mode, which I believe requires changes to the network itself.

Failing that you can probably do this with linksys routers and custom firmware.

Boy, the things you can do with a Pringles can. We made Pringles Can Cannons when I was a kid... had one misfire that shinged off my brothers eyebrows.

People here have different brands of wireless routers so I'd like to know if any one has that feature. I'll be looking at their manuals on the web but would like to know how it works in practice.

Btw, does anyone know of any good tutorials on how to attach/build an an external antenna to the mini-pci wi-fi card?

You could use a USB AP, though I don't really know how long a cable USB allows. As to using someone elses Internet connection, that is theft. For great info on free or low cost antennas, Free Antennas! has the stuff,
