Switching RAM

I wanted to ask if it is possible to take out a 256MB chip of RAM from my 8600 and put it in my R51. Will that create any major issues?

I want to do this because I am not allowed to use my 8600 at work, its a personal laptop, and the company has given me an R51 which I am not too fond of with only 256 MB of RAM. They won't pay to upgrade RAM, they'll get IBMs, but they won't get RAM, go figure. I don't use my 8600 very much any more, so I was wondering if adding more RAM from my 8600 to my R51 was possible.

Any comments?

The R51 has one integrated slot with 256MB and one open, upgradeable slot. The RAM from the i8600 is compatible, so you should be able to use the open slot to insert a RAM module from the Inspiron into the IBM with little difficulty. Sorry couldn't dig up any pics, maybe the user manual for the IBM has some instructions? Usually with memory upgrades it is accessible through a hatch on the bottom and you just snap the module in.

Stu- so what you're saying is that everything should work fine provided I find where the RAM slots are, that makes me happy. Thanks.

Absolutely. The RAM they use is identical, 200-pin SODIMMs. The R51 may be restricted to PC2100 depending on the model chosen, but the PC2700 from the i8600 is still compatible and will automatically clock itself down. So yeah, happy upgrading!
