how hard is it to add memory to the 12" ibook?

Thread Starter
I am thinking of buying a Apple iBook Notebook 12" M9623LL/A (1.2 GHz PowerPC G4, 256MB RAM, 30GB Hard Drive, Combo Drive, Built-in AirPort Extreme) from amazon since they have a 100$ rebate and 12 months no APR. So i am wondering how hard would it be to add the bluetooth module? is it built into the motherboard or do they have a hiden USB port somewhere inside where you simply plug in a bluetooth dongle? What about RAM? i heard they 256 is built in, so i would buy a 512 chip, how hard is it to install that too?

If it's like the PowerBook it's as simple as opening a small hatch and then popping it in.

Bluetooth in the iBooks and Powerbooks can not easially be added. Best to take it to a repair shop for that.

Ram on the iBooks is installable under the keyboard. There are two latches at the top of the keyboard and a 3rd one with a tiny "screw" to turn. Once lifted up, it shows where the memory goes.

go to http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowledge,type-6.htm
then go to knowledge and click, all white (ibook). there's step by step

blackout,
that's a G3 iBook from the looks of it. the internals are similar to the G4 but are not identical. screw counts and locations in particular are different once u get inside the case.

chron,
as noted, RAM is easy. BT requires near complete disassembly of the machine to access the BT locale, and even then u'd need an iBook BT kit which is not easy to come by. if u r feeling adventurous, PM me.

Does installing generic RAM yourself invalidate your iBook's warranty, though? Or would an Apple store even be willing to do that for you if you brought the RAM in (say, at the time of iBook purchase)? And I know that Apple has pretty strict requirements for their RAM; so would a generic stick of PC3200 SO-DIMM notebook RAM be expected to work at PC2100 speeds (but with strict memory timings that Apple enforces)?

No -- I did it myself, np. And Apple Support has been cool with it. If you're nervous, take it to the Apple Store, and have a "Genius" do it for you.

BTW, a jump from 128mb to 768mb was a huge performance boost.

As for the RAM itself, I ordered a generic, and so far (9 months and counting) no problems at all.

I have a question. Is there one ram bay or two in the iBook? What I'm asking is, if I bought a 1GB stick would the memory upgrade then be 1gb or 1.25gb of memory?

there's 1 open bay. there is no second "bay" however the stock 256MB of RAM is soldered to the motherboard, on the bottom side where u can't see or get at it without completely disassembling the iBook. so if u got 1GB u would in fact have 1.25GB of RAM, the next step down is of course 768MB w/ an added 512MB stick.
