HOw can you detect when a bank of RAM goes bad?

Hey, think I had 512mb in this laptop (was recently given to me) but today it's showing 256mb. Given some other problems I had recently (had to wipe and reinstall), I really think a bank might have gone bad. SHort of cracking poen the case and checking, how can I tell?

MemTest-86

try running Memtest-86 - http://www.memtest86.com/. Microsoft also makes a memory tester which you can download for free at this site: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

if you find that one of your sticks of ram is defective please let us know the brand.

Many Vaio models have problems with cold solder joints at the memory slot...usually #1 which is I believe the one closest to the front.
This will give you an idea of whats involved and what a widespread problem it really is.

Slot 2 is more prevelent on the GRX/GRV's FX.. (rear slot).. It requires resoldering of the contacts to the board and if you dont do it right it will not boot at all. If you need help weve done a ton of these and I personally love the Sonys. (Even though the CS is dead last). Who cares I fix them myself so theyre pretty much irellevant to me..What model is your Sony?

I need mine fixed!!!

My GRX500 just died..after I got Debian 3.1 installed and everything running. It has been repaired once before (soldering by SONY). It's been a year since. In order to boot, I have to press hard on the memory cover, and I've even glued a pastic card beneath the cover. It worked for awhile, but this ghetto fix is really annoying and unreliable. I've disassembled the entire laptop, but I can't see where the problem is. How much do you charge for this?
