second thoughts about m70

I ordered the M70 the other day and now i am have some serious second thoughts. The programs i currently use heavily require the cpu and frankly I dont think that the mobile processor would be up for it. I could buy a 3 ghz ht laptop for like 1K and that would probably run my apps faster. By the time I get done with putting in 2gb ram on the m70 it will cost a total of $2400
I think I would be alot better off with just getting a like a sony or toshiba 3ghz notebook and then using the rest of the money to build a powerful desktop.

What do u guys think.

First review I googled suggests the M70 is no slouch:

But a lot of us do like having a desktop in addition to a portable. And YOU have to be happy with what you buy.

I can agree with this. As obvious as the names state, portable is meant to be just that while desktop can host more power. I fully endorse both options as Im a student and after a day's intake of class stuff, I get home to the desktop and apply the more resourceful applications.

yeah, gotta be happy with the purchase. I'm still exstatic myself, but the laptop is/will be more powerful than my current desktop, which was doing a'ight with my programs. Sure I could get a newer desktop as well, but for now this will suffice. I should also say though, that being a freelancer I almost always go and work at the companies studio and use their boxes(typically Boxxes), so my home computer doesn't come into play.

My M70 should be arriving any minute now - hooray!

Luckily, I already have an okay desktop (although the M70 will have a far better gfx card), so mobility was one of my main concerns. The M70 isn't exactly a feather, but it certainly beats those hot'n'heavy P4 beasties. There's always a compromise with a laptop, but I feel that the PMs are the only way to go for me at the moment.

We'll see if I regret my purchase after a week of hammering away (on the sofa! in any room! in the garden!) in 3dsmax and after effects.

hey torrent, still undecided about the laptop? I've gotta say, in regards to real world performance I'm really impressed with my friends. Sitting next to some nice Boxx workstations it held its own and even did better in some day to day working. We didn't run tests, we had things to do , but moving a textured model in OpenGL mode actually was faster on his laptop than on a dual opteron workstation with a quadro 3000.

Well now i'm worried about the ram upgrades. I hear that to maximize the ddr2 u have to run two identical rams. I was thinking of just buying a gig now and another gig later if i need it as many as you guys have decided on doing that as well . But by using a 1 ddr2 module it decreases the bandwith considerably from with i hear.
So i was wondering if i buy a gig now and another like in a couple of months, will that bring back the bandwidth or will it still be slow considering that the second ram may have different specs.

I still haven't cxled my order yet and i am leaning more towards not cxling,

my friend that has his m70 now as a 256 and a 512 and it runs fine. He is going to eventually get 2gigs, but when he got it, apparently 1gig sticks were really a pain to find so he just got the 512. So, obviously it isn't like the computer will suck if it isn't in dual channel. From what I hear it isn't as much of a boost in performance as we (consumers and maybe the manufacturers) would want. Supposedly later it'll be better, but the fsb of the pentium Ms just isn't fast enough.

So, basically I wouldn't worry if you wanna get 1gig stick and then eventually get another. I'm thinking I may do that as well.
