Nope, it's pretty easy to install the LCD just follow the dell service manual on their web page.

There is about 2 or 3 other threads that focus more on the swapping process if you need more information.

i swear, i did not look at the pictures from dell. well the only advantage i had was that the first time the tech came over i just saw how he did it, i can say that i can do it faster and cleaner then the tech can. can i call my self dell certified lcd replacement tech now?

I only got the default warranty. In order for a dell tech to show up, must one have purchased a higher level of support?

I do have to question some of the reviews out there (especially the smaller sites). The only reason for this, is that I've seen first-hand the tactics Samsung has used in the past to ensure a product of theirs gets a good review (or an award of sorts). I don't know if they still do this, but my experiences with them as a reviewer a few years ago have made me a little extra cautious.

In the end though, I will admit that Samsung produces some darn good displays -- but I will also say that no company is perfect, and there are bound to be some bad products that come along as well.

Hey everyone,
I just looked up under my service tag to see which screen my system has (I havn't recieved it yet), and the website said

1F5399ASSEMBLY, CABLE, COAXIAL, LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, SULLIVAN/GILBERT
1J9662LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 17, Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array, GLARE WIDE VIEWING ANGLE, LENGTH/LONG

No where in the description did it mention Samsung or Lg, am I looking at the wrong place?

Thanks,
Anliony

You know I have to step in on Jim-H's behalf here. He is right, Samsung has been THE leader in LCD technology for as long as I can remember. Even a year ago everyone was waiting for the new Samsung Desktop LCDs because they were superior to everyone else in refresh, color, etc. I have never seen anyone rave about an LG. While not a small company by any means - selling more of something does not make your product superior. Take for instance nVidia & ATI about 4-5 years ago. ATI was selling a lot more chipsets - direct to manufacturers like Dell & HP. But they did not have the superior product when considering performance at that time. They were just the lucky bastards that landed the business. It really is more about what market you are going after...eMachine or Sony would be another good comparison. I am sure Sony sells fewer, but I'd take a Sony over an eMachine...

That said, I have the LG screen. Maybe mine is subpar compared to the rest but I have issues beyond the sparkle effect. When I put up a white screen and look directly at it - there is about a 1" section in the center that is white. To either side of this section there is a "shadowed" appearance - think of kind of rectangular alien eyes as a shape. Below the "eyes" is another "white" strip that gradually gets shaded down to the bottom of the screen. Each lower corner of the screen is much darker in about a 3/8" radius from the corner. I do not see any detectable light leakage. This is all looking directly at the screen. Not off to a side or anything like that. I have to say the sparkle on mine is horrendous. Even in a "medium" blue I see it. Colors in general need to get pretty dark for it to go away.

As for brightness, I certainly hope the Samsung is brighter. I have mine cranked and my old clunker HP is brighter. Like I said, maybe I have a particularly bad one - ordered it the first day they were availble...

But I do some pretty serious photo editing and I can not work on photos with this...I can with my old desktop Samsung though...

As far as I am concerned a $3500 laptop should have a flawless screen. I know you can get cheaper builds, but sitting next to a sony there is no comparison.

I just got the GEN2 with the Samsung LCD and was looking over what you guys are saying about the both screens (LG vs Samsung)....has anyone noticed a sort of "Mesh-like" look to the Samsung screens. I am not talking about the "sparkle effect. You can really notice it when there is a solid color and there is movement or even if you look at the screen and move your head? It looks like you are looking through a mesh, but when the image is still it is ok?!? I have seen this exact thing on other Samsung screens and it is really starting to bug me. Perhaps I am wayyyyy too picky, but even my old 8200 with the ultra-sharp UXGA screen seemed to have a smoother image quality. The one good thing about the Samsung is how bright it is....just a shame about the "meshy" appearance.

Anyone noticing this?

I have a K9975 LG screen... came with the original specs... ordered a samsung replacement, but after using for a while, i decided to retain the LG because of the fact that the LG has far better brightness, color depth and very clear black background..with little light leakage, only noticeable when i stand up and look from the top or bow down and look upward.... my god, hate to see the samsung with so annoying large light leakage on the bottom, really bugs me when it boots or when something black is in the background.... so, i finally decided for LG, though with quite a bit sparkle... but its ok... one can't have everything....

SO.... on my XPS GEN 2 WUXGA, brand new...

I had an LG... grimy, grainy, no white to be found, but great black and good color. Also had a tiled kind of cellular look in the glossy reflection.

I compared it to the WUXGA in the SONY laptop... no comparison, the SONY WUXGA display is FLAWLESS, no grain, no pixel grid, perfect color, SOLID WHITES, SOLID BLACKS. Problem is it's on a vastly inferior SONY product.

I had my LG display replaced with a SAMSUNG, SEC5557 (says Seiko-Epson), and it is generally worse than the LG. FIRST OF ALL, the screen is not TRUE-LIFE, it's a flat, dull finish... there is a very fine mesh texture across the screen and this one DOES sparkle worse than the LG, colors are worse than the LG, cannot be adjusted to get a black on the screen... AND THE WHITE AREAS ARE STILL GRAINY!!!!!!!!! UGGHHH.

Has anyone else compared the dell WUXGA displays to the WUXGA in the SONY? When you do, you'll understand how TRULY unacceptable the quality of the DELL WUXGA display is.

Has anyone else received dull-finish Samsung displays? Or are yours TrueLife glossy displays?

Dell explained to the onsite tech that the glossy and dull finishes use the same part number and you never know which one you get until you open the box! Nice way to manage parts.
Wow, that's a new one. You got one of the 9200 WUXGA displays put on your 9300. Those LCDs are grainy because of the anti-glare coating, which is normal. Everybody else has the glossy LCDs.
If your Samsung replacement is not glossy, they shipped the wrong part. Ask Dell to send you another LCD.

Figured it was the wrong part...

WELL... I can say one thing for sure, I wish I had kept the previous screen, because now I'm stuck with this one until another replacement comes.

While I will give DELL a bit of credit for finally dealing with this issue.... It is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous that so much of my time had to be wasted and that it took hours of research and 8 hours of phone time to find someone who would admit awareness of this problem that is extensively documented across the web and at the DELL forums, AND dates back to the 9200.... THEN, the service appointment representative freely states that they are scheduling HUNDREDS of these replacements.

HAHA and then they send entirely the WRONG part out for replacement... while the DELL XPS GEN 2 support technician on the phone with the onsite tech has "never heard of the display problems" and then says "the displays are performing as designed"... oh, I guess the problem is in the design then, defective design. Good excuse. Makes me feel better for spending $2800 on a top-of-the-line laptop (sarcasm).

And it's the same over and over with various technology companies, computers, cell phone services, etc. Deny, deny, deny, so that the customer will likely give up and then if the customer finally figures out the truth AND reaches someone who is ALLOWED to discuss the issue they will finally deal with it.

Yes, I own one and up til I got my Dell a few weeks ago it's all I worked on for 9 months.

I don't know what that means that Dell sent you a non-glossy WUXGA screen as a replacement. Some of us have postulated that Dell simply took those screens and added a glossy layer. This may be more evidence of that in that you may have gotten one that got missed somehow.

I really don't know what to think about the various complaints about the Samsung (besides yours). Mine is definitely brighter, very, very light leakage and has great colors. I've been sceptical about the differenter reports because I couldn't believe there could be that much variation in the screens of the same model (LG to LG, and Samsung to LG, not LG to Samsung). It appears the preference is about 50/50, whereas my own preference is so extremely on the Samsung side.

Part Number on SONY?

What is the display part number identification on the SONY as shown in POWERSTRIP?

We've seen some indication that it might also be a SAMSUNG display. It would definitely be interesting to see what your SONY has.

My personal experience is this.I have recently owned a Toshiba Qosmio G15,and Vaio A290.The LG screen I had was a very good screen but not in Toshiba or Sony's league.I have since had my LG replaced with a Samsung and I would say the Samsung I got is very close to the Sony Xbrite still not near the Qosmio's quality but definately a major step up.
