Interesting. I guess when I return my 9300 for the WUXGA, I will also go for the 100GB 5400 drive. I thought there wouldn't be a big difference between the it and the 7200rpm drive.

Food for thought for those who have not yet purchased. Get 20 more GB with essentially same IO speed at a cheaper price. Let the suckers brag about their 7200 rpm disks

Yeah, I was surprised, but 7200 RPM is 33% faster than 5400 RPM, and 80GB is 33% more dense than 60GB, so I guess the transfer rates are pretty much a wash. I haven't measured seek time yet, and that's probably a different story.

The 60GB 7200 is a faster drive and when that 80GB starts filling up you'll really notice it...

Yay Dellbert. I'm glad you finally got yours. Now you can calm people down who are getting rowdy about having an LG.

Plus, the 7K60 has a much faster seek time too.....

Hey Dellbert, just so you know I have the LG too and i can clearly see the slanted lines in the middle box that you said you can't see. Have you adjust your colors at all? Mine are default.

OK, I just ran HD Tach on both drives. Average transfer rate is about the same for the two, but:

Burst transfer rate: 60@7200=92, 80@5400=35 MB/s
seek time: 60@7200=15, 80@5400=18 ms

There must be because I see sparkles on all light colors...I can't imagine anyone thinking the screen I have as even decent.

I'm at default settings, and on the LG, I can *barely* make out the diagonal lines. On the Samsung, there's very clear separation.

Hey, the "sparkles" are on the LG. I think everybody admits that. I'm just saying it doesn't look much worse to me than the sparkles created by the anti-glare coating on my Samsung. That's not to say I love the LG -- I really think Dell should be able to ship a sparkle-free glossy just like every other computer maker, but I can see how people could tolerate this level of sparkle.

dellbert, that is a great review, well structured

your drive results confirm what toms hardware mobile drive review said, 7200 quikest but not by much. I got an 80gb as I need the extra room

Can I ask a couple of questions:

is your drive an hitachi?

would you be willing to run the same drive and video tests on your 8400 for comaprison?

thanks for all the time you have put in

Dellbert, have you tried running Feature Tools from Hitachi to turn off acoustic management and increase power consumption on the 7200 rpm drive? It may speed things up a little. Here is the link....Just download the bootable CD image.

Did you cancel your XPS2 order yet? It sounds like you might get it before your 9300 21 window is up (which is contrary to what we believed a month ago). Maybe you will get the Samsung on it and can compare both Glossys side by side.
I have been on the edge of the loop for the last few days due to a new project taking off at work. (yea i am actually doing work again around here darn it) Anyway if you (the ultimate picky one) can tollerate the LG then I am sure it will be just fine for me. And if i get the Samsung then ill do a bigger happy dance. As of now I dont see anythign that will rain on my parade of owning the #1 laptop in the world. XPS2 RULES!!!!!!
(i shouldn't get so worked up, its just a computer... right?!....but its not just a computer, its my life. my old life can retire to fileserver status now.)

The 60@7200 is a hitachi, the 80@5400 is a fujitsu.

My desktop gets a pcmark04 score of around 5200 (from memory), and I just ran HD Tach on it: avg rd=55 MB/s, avg seek=20ms, burst=124 MB/s. That's for a 250GB SATA WD.

Yeah, the 9200 Samsung is the same model as the 9300 Samsung, except yours has a glossy coating on it.
