XPS2 owners: Tell us about your WUXGA display - Page 3

Got mine last night and spent a good bit of time with it. I have the LG. Probably about a half inch of light leakage across the bottom and radiates up slightly, when viewing content everything looks good and uniform though. One stuck pixel half way up and to the right side of the screen - slightly annoying. Lastly I have small black smudges in both bottom corners???? Anyone else report this with the LG??? I love the laptop but I may try to get a replacement LCD just out of curiousity and hope it's a little better. Oh and 5055 3dmark05, stock drivers with fresh install on a new HD. Gonna run it on my desktop(8400, P4 630 3Ghz, 6800 GTO) and see how bad the Gen2 beats it :-)

Cancelling XPSG2?

My XPSG2 is in testing. I am very close to canceling the order though. I am not interested in a $4k computer that has a substandard screen. I was drawn to this lappy because of the Ultra card, battery life and weight, but the screen is a deal killer. There is not a perfect computer out there and if I get the 9860, it will have its own set of challenges, but the screen is critical. I don't feel like using or abusing the 21 day return policy either. If the screen was great, then the XPSG2 would be hands down the best of the best. I am considering the 9860 with the Ultra as it is due out in less than a month. This screen debate has been informative and some do like their screens, but the mere fact that it has been so heavily discussed leads me to believe that the screen is a question mark at least. I'm not sure what I will do, but I have to make a decision soon.

I have no leakage, screen is clear, not seeing sparkles, I am extremely happy with my screen! Much better than the gateway laptop that I had thats for sure! Compared it w/a company laptop screen w/the same screen type and is clearer and more sharp. (BOTH ARE LG true life, etc). I am pleased with this, maybe im one of the few that got lucky????

My eyes....ouch....my eyes....

Got my lappy yesterday....what a beast, didn't think it was going to be that large, but hey a 17" screen will do that to the size. First impressions, very well built system, great keyboard (compared to 8600 & 600m), 50lbs Power supply, a bit of an issue with the rubber legs - front left lifts up when the screen is at 100+ degree angle.

So the screen.... it has minimal light leakage on the bottom, but the sparkle issue is terrible. Couple of observations, the sparkle effect happens if your head is positioned straight in line with the display, if you look from an angle down onto the screen it is less noticeable. Open notepad, and the sparkle effect everyone is ranting about is there, I got the LG screen and there is texture you see on the screen, hard to explain and impossible to recreate with my Canon Digital Rebel. The sides of the screen are darker if you look straight at the display, and even with Powerstrip Gamma and Color optimization it is still noticeable. I don't know if I could get used to it...

There has been many opinions in regards to the LG screen on the XPS2 and it depends on many factors if your display shows a sparkle effect:

1. Angle you are positioned when viewing the screen
2. Other light sources
3. Gamma and Color settings
4. How close you are to the screen
5. Your opinion on what a smooth white surface should look like

In my books, I anticipated the whites to be like looking at a glass of milk, smooth and...well simply white. This LG screen is far from that. There is texture on the whites when viewing notepad for example fully maximized, and if you move your head slightly you will notice that the textures appear to be moving. Compare it to the Sony or Toshiba screens and they DO NOT have the same texture effect. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg, what a ________ of _______, _________ _______ ________ _____ screen. I need a replacement....

I have the LG screen, love it so far. Per my other thread, I was able to minimize the so-called Sparkle effect to the point where I, at least, don't notice it. The colors are excellent, the display nice and bright, the viewing angles very good. I have a small amount of light leakage at the bottom as others have reported but it's not any worse than I've seen in other laptops (and heads and tails better than my Sager 5680, which leaks to the sides as well) and not really noticeable except at boot time.

The display did ship with a rather "cold" color setting, as Dellbert and I have pointed out, so I would recommend renting a good video calibration disk like Video Essentials from Netflix and using it to tune your display. I ended up with a display that looks much, much better to me after doing just that.

Finally, this display really ROCKS with games - I don't think anyone has argued that point yet. World of Warcraft looks better than it does on my Philips 19' LCD, and the Philips is one nice display. And surprisingly, despite the fact that that LCD appears to have a 25ms response time, I don't see much ghosting during games or DVD movies. My Philips has a 12ms response time so usually compared to it I can pick out ghosting easily (my 5680 has a 25ms panel and ghosting is VERY apparent on it next to the Philips) but that isn't the case with this LG screen.

For the legions of you panicking and ready to cancel your orders before you have even SEEN the LG screen, I would wait. Make your own judgement and don't be swayed by the rampant paranoia on these boards. I am very happy with my purchase, display included.

I was set up to have my LG screen replaced on my XPS with a Samsung LCD, but I just got a call from Dell stating management had decided to deny my replacement and went further to say that the LCD is the way it is and will not replace it. LeeU

hmm... I wonder if too many people are trying to get replacements. Well I know if I get the same scree back I am simply going to return my system.

Wow... denied replacement. They must be catching on to all those 9300's.

LeeU - I would try again with a different person.

Well it is Dell's fault for the 9300 screens not being up to par

Glad to see Dell is seeing this LCD issue for what it is....BS!
These so called 'Sparkles' actually to me are just almost an optical illusion of a sort. When my eyes try to read the proper depth of the LCD, it seems to show this pattern inside. It's really not at all what people are making it out to be although maybe QC was bad and is getting better.
Mine only has very slight light leakage from the bottom. My real test will be gaming. I haven't seen a lot of people commenting on how the LG is vs the Samsung in actual games. Is it smoother on the LG? I bet it just might be....

Just to clarify things here, the so called sparkle effect would it be like looking through a screen door? When I maximize Notepad and look straight at the screen, my eye-level at the centre of the screen, the whites appear to have a 3D texture to them. Not like the smooth whites you see on a good CRT. When you look at the screen on a downwards angle the texture effect is less noticeable, but if you glance to the sides, you once again are faced with this texture look which gets progressively worse towards the outer edge. Should I just lay off the drugs, or does anyone else have this textured, looking through a screen door effect?

BTW, I have the X9065 17WU,GWVA,XPS-2,LG LCD (in case someone with an XPS2 has a different model)

I have the same issue. I'd describe it as glittering, sparkling, and others. But the most telling description I've come up with is that if you open up Dead Pixel Buddy or Paint and set the screen to one solid color I can easily count 5-7 different shades of that same color. Each pixel seems to have its own shade. I do a lot of photoshop from time to time so it was really noticeable to me.

I am able to track my replacement now. I've found that you just go to the order status page and set it to accept your customer number and zip code it'll work. I'm hoping my replacement doesn't sparkle at all or as much. The more I use this system the more I like it.

My replacement XPS2 status isn't availabe yet, guess it needs 24hrs. Love everything else about it. The whites on the Sony or Toshiba laptops are soo smooth, not like the XPS2....

Green is one of the colors that really displays the sparkles. When I set my background to solid green it was lightgreen, normal green and dark dark green all over the screen.

OK, now that I have my XPS Gen 2 I will comment on the screen.

I have the LG1000 or whatever that one is, and here's what I've found:

It does have the "sparkling" effect, but it's no worse than my roommates 600m. I guess I've never seen a good WUXGA glossy LCD, but I can see how it might annoy some people. I don't think it will be a problem for me, but I may choose to try a different screen later on down the line.

The color and response time are pretty good, but I'm not too picky about colors. Response time is probably a little better than usual (better than my roomate's 600m). I have some light leaking from the bottom, and I haven't found any dead pixels.

Overall, I can only say it's "good enough," but I think this forum has made me more critical of this screen than I would have been. But like I said, I may change my mind.

So, there sending you a new system or just lcd replacement?

You guys should all check out the glossy display on the 700m. Granted I like the 9300's Samsung screen, but it is not better that the tiny little 700m. The whites are bright white and the colors are vibrant. I wish that company made a 17 WUXGA version of the same screen.
