That's crap, I hope you return it. I know some people find them acceptable, but many do not, just because some people will accept a substandard does not make it right. I can't believe Dell doing this to people now.

Ok I was pretty happy with my screen last night till this morning. Was typing up a paper on a full screen white background and noticed the "screen effect" everyone has been discussing - it does look pretty nasty. Called up Dell tech support and they insisted they won't send out a unit to me unless I'm a dell certified tech. They did agree to send the kit to a certified tech in my area and have him replace it - I made sure to ask that if it was going to be a refurb and he said, "no the xps is too new". Course I reminded him that the xps and 9300 have the same WUXGA.

Anyhow, he confirmed that the replacement kit is the W9892 Samsung so hopefully its a decent one they send out. I also asked him what to do incase the tech screws up and damages the computer in anyway and they said they'd take responsibility for anything that does occur which is fine I guess. They're going to send out the unit tomorrow and the tech is supposed to call me on Monday. I'll report back to the thread once the tech has switched out the display. If the replacement display sucks, I'm gonna make that tech put back the LG.

Keep in mind that even though the replacement screen might be new, there is the possiblity for the box to have a "Refurbrished" sticker on it. But you will notice that the refurb sticker was stuck on there a few minutes before the box was shipped.

Yeah as long as the display itself looks good and seems new I won't mind too much. How do you like your samsung screen?
I like it much better than the LG they sent me. Whites are brighter and whiter, colors look the same with gamma decreased to 0.89. These is also minimal light leakage, only a 0.2 inch line at the bottom of the screen, so its not bad. There is also no dead pixels or uneven lighting. Good luck on your replacement.

ths samsung has really bad sparkels(horizontal lines) whites and all other
collors have a grey overcast(dim overall) and the light leakage is the worst i have ever seen(blank screen saver has patches of lighter areas
over entire screen)
prob most samsungs are better, i just got a bad one

ps i did the replacement, spliting the bezel was the hardest/longest part
thats why the bezel isn't going back on until i have the final screen on it

Yeah that sounds pretty crappy. Did you do the replacement or did they send a tech? If that happens to me I'm just gonna insist he let me keep my LG.

How did you convince them to let you do it? Or are you a dell certified tech?

Im not a dell tech but I have "done time" on the other side
of the phone(think cow spotted boxes)so i kinda know how things work.
I think a combo of polite persistence and luck(the right csr)
is all its takes. dont be afraid to call back a few times, plus
be polite and try not to argue with them(even if there wrong) if you piss one off they will make note of it and that wont be good
this thread was very informative

Been playing with the GEN2 today... I now FINALLY know what others mean by:
sparkles
screen/mesh
holographic
shaded

To ME another (perhaps better description) is that with whites and especially silver, it looks like metalic paint with a heavy clearcoat. Green, although the nastiest, doesnt look like paint/clearcoat.... it defies description. Whites look like there might be a little pearl also.

Not sure how much of an issue it is. Only time will tell but I will try the tweaking solutions first before replacement. While not worried about having green wallpaper, documents and web use might be rough.

Screen is the LG

I have a quick question for whomever can answer:

Can I get an LCD swap anytime in my 3 year warranty, or must it be within the 21 day return policy? I presume it's covered by my 3 year warranty, since I'm not returning this computer, I just may want to try a different screen when I have time this summer.
You will be able to do it during the 3 years you have. However, it will take some because you will have to convince them that your display is actually defective. It is usually much quicker during the 21 day return window because you can tell them, well if you don't send me the replacement display, I will just return my computer. Some 9300/XPS2 users have already been denied a replacment because Dell said that their displays are within specs.

technically its covered but they(dell) will be more coporative
to resolve an issue while you have the "return" option

got my 2nd samsung replacement: is slightly brighter
than my best LG but has moderate light leakage issues
and has noticable horizontal line sparkeling(my LG's
don't have sparkeling issues, just the one on the 9300
has light leakage) the LG on my xps is around one step brighter than the 9300 and has no light leakage(a near perfect display)
since i can't get a decent lcd for the 9300 its going back
(the xps was a keeper nomater what happened)

I can see very marked sparkles opening a full screen white background application, like Notepad. Moving myself left and right results in vague dark vertical bands (half-an-inch to inch wide) to shift left and right across the screen,

Can anyone see the same effect?
Got my XPS2 this past Thursday. Turns out my screen is LG. The sparkle effect is quite noticeable against a white background. I also see light-leakage at the bottom of the screen.

What was even more annoying was that the metallic (aluminum?) backing behind my screen was full of scratch marks! Looked as if the laptop was placed upside down on a rough surface. What happened to Dell's Quality Control??

Anyway, I called Dell and they offered to send a replacement system. I checked the status 24hrs later and it looks like the new systems has gone through production and is undergoing testing. Pretty fast response... makes me wonder if they're sending me another crappy "refurb" system. .... "@%#(@$%()$
