Dell Support WARNING!!

Okay, I'm not talking about the Indians, here...j

Format your machine the second you get it, otherwise, little boxes with sound-effects will pop up all the time while you're working with such sage advice as:

DELL SUPPORT: CONFIGURE YOUR SCREEN SAVER SETTINGS!!

There is no screen saver set up on your monitor.
This may DAMAGE the monitor!
You should protect it by setting up a screen saver!

Bwhahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahhaaaa!!!!!

WTF?!?!?! I'm going to reformat the hard drive right now, as these little boxes of wisdom pop up about every 10 seconds to let you know that your settings are not Dell Default (tm) settings, and therefore may be dangerous, subversive, or unpatriotic!

EDIT: Got my XPS2...like the screen (LG) except for weird 'shadows' along the sides that show up only on white backgrounds and are rather subtle...but they are there...weird...is this 'light leakage'? I thought light leakage was white light blowing up from the bottom on a black background? The biggest thing I have to get used to after the matte monitor of the XPS1 is the REFLECTIONS, which are ubiquitous and annoying. That will happen with any glossy screen, though, eh? Anyhow, I'll give more details this afternoon after I reformat...

The LG panel on my WXGA+ also has a shadow on the left corner on white/light colors. My wife even saw it so I know I'm not crazy.

The shadow is only seen at certain angles. Straight on, I don't see it, but move my head a little to the left and then I see it.

Must be something with the coating. Other than that, the screen came with no dead pixels and has acceptable (to me) backlight bleed....

Oh man, I cant wait to see these little boxes of wisdom! That would annoy the hell out of me. Are most people doing a fresh install when they get their machine? I think I may do that. Does dell install that much crap that is hard to get rid of?

Hammer, please tell me how your reformat goes. I want to do the same thing today and am a little confused about which drivers I need from the Dell site.
typically you need:

-chipset
-wireless/BT if you have them
-ethernet
-modem
-touchpad
-audio
-video
-dell quickset for the led management

Yeah, a lot of that stuff isn't on Dell's Download page (audio drivers, modem, chipset, 2915 wireless, etc.). I'm hoping they're included on the Dell resource CD so I don't have too much hassle. I've downloaded most everything I could find, but the chipset utility is the one I'm worried about. I downloaded the 915 Express chipset from Intel's site. I hope that's the right one.

At least for the 9300, there was no resource CD included.

All necessary drivers are on the Dell Resource CD...make sure you install the Dell Notebook System Software first, then the Intel Chipset Drivers, and then any order is fine, I think...
I actually installed the chipset driver first as well as a few other things, then I noticed the notebook software and installed it. Everything appears to be okay.

Thanks for explaining. I'm glad someone else is doing this before I get mine, so I can learn for your mistakes. It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it.

What OS are you guys putting on?

I'm going to try Windows 2003 Enterprise or 2005 Media Center

XP pro...yeah, I don't know why the System Software has to be first, but a Dell Engineer told me that last year when we spoke about my XPS1, so...?

I just reformatted and installed SP2 XP Pro...no problems...make sure to delete ALL the partitions, though, or it will still detect 2 OSes upon start-up and you'll have to delete one from your Boot.ini file to get it straight...no biggie, though...

Hmm...I only deleted the main partition and am not having any problems. I thought it would be smart to keep that extra partition in case I ever wanted to restore the laptop to the factory conditions.
