Overclocking CPU on i9100.

Thread Starter
After hearing and reading from ppl who had done this(overclocked cpu on i9100)
so i was thinking to overclock my cpu on my i9100 from 3.0ghz to 3.4ghz. Is it possible? Is it dangerous? If possible how much will the temperatur raise? How do I overclock it? Do I use some kind of software? Has anyone tried it? Any recommendation?

I am asking because my sysinfo says it possible?
see below:

CPU manufacturer: Intel
Current CPU speed: 3000 MHz
External clock: 200 MHz
Max. CPU speed supported by board: 3400 MHz ??????? Anyone understand this?
L1 cache size: 8 KB (internal)
L2 cache size: 512 KB (internal)

Can some please answer some of these question and help me . Thank you very much!

Search the forum for "CPUFSB" - small program that does the trick.

And since you have a Northwood I am thinking the heat generated cant be as bad as a 3.4 Prescott. Hence my attempt in a few months to move to a 3.4 EE Northwood proc. Or else gaming during summer in a non air conditioned room would be nuts!!
Do the extreme edition CPU's use the same MOBO?
yes as long as they are the socket 478 versions
post #6 of 33
Is the heat output from the northwood alot less?
Does it produce any performance gains over the standard prescott?
How much are they ?

I ask as my 9100 3.4 is running at 62c almost constant or above during hard gaming.
Just looked on my local website, the fastest they have is the northwood 3.0ghz at 100 pounds.... i thought it was going to be like 900 !!!

I will have a look about for the 3.4 northwood.

I might then put the old 3.4 prescott into my old desktop assuming the motherboard takes it....

Langers have you overclock your cpu to 3.4 prescott? Had any problems yet? I get 58c when hardcore gaming on my cpu when 3.0ghz nortwood with very high OC video card(from its standard). Heard below 70c is no danger for cpu.

When playing for a long time, there is hot air blowing out from behind. Sometimes its much some times not. The fans goes variable all the time when i play. And the memory gets pretty hot though, normal i think.

the i9100 works fine as a heater when its cold. No need for termostat when the i9100 is nearby. lol. Heard the acer laptop is even worse.

I'm starting to wonder if the 9800s are down clocked, due to their manufacturing process they should be able to clock at least were the X800 SE is at which is 450/400. The X800se is an 8 pipe core with ddr ram...

Superfly have you been able to clock past 450/425?

I have mine clocked at 450/398, just ran ATItool for 10 mins and it checked out ok.

I went from a css bench of 30 at 1920x1200 with stock clocks to 60 at 1920x1200 with the new overclock.

I have clocked my ati mobility 9800 at 450/425 with no problems. I have ran serval test. Wich has shown no error. And yes I have been running ati tool check for 1 hour no errors.

Have played alot with this oc no problems.

I think I can be able to push the oc even futher. But just like 5-10 core and 5-10 memory more. No point in that. Very little differance in the fps.

When M18(mr9800) is overclocked to 450/425 it's deffenetly faster than the desktop card 9800 XT . Many serval test with 9800xt wich have been made, and wich I have comperd to mine show that.
How do you know 5-10 on the core, just let ati tool do its thing and once you see an error you stop it. I have read somewhere that some has got the core up to 500 with no problems...

Tested it. I just left it 450/425, because much safer!
yeah 500, but what is the memory? Remeber memory is the source to faster fps.

I doubdt it's high.

The memory? I doubt the memory will go too high since it is ddr.

But the 9800 core is based on X800 techonology so it should be a good overclocker.

I have an X800 Pro. It was orignally clocked at 475/450 with 12 pipes. I have flashed it to the X800 XT PE and enabled 16 pipes at 520/560. I am pretty maxxed out on my memory (I think) anything past 570 and the screen jacks up. Now my core is a different story, it clocks up to like 560. I have been running as a X800 XT PE for about 7 months now

So I dunno, the 9800 is a good overclocker... the ram is holding it back.

wow that's nice! Even nicer with 16 pipes. How much is the difference between 12 to 16 pipes?

Some is trying to unlock 12 pipes from mr9800. Hope they manage that.

Bone stock out of the box with the drivers that were on the cd I scored like 8500 in 3dmark03 i think, i cant remember, now I get 12,618 in 3dmark03 and about 5750 in 3dmark05

Nice score you got. That's a big increase. You got 8 pipes shaders too? Since you flashes your card to x800 xt pe. Think it got 16 pixel and 8 shader pipes.
How the smeg did you get such a high score, your sig is the same spec as mine yet I got high 3000's.

Nobody answered my questions

Ive had a look around on the web and most tests show the prescott to out perform the northwood... is the northwood the older chip?

I ran WOW for about 4 hours yesterday and the records from fangui show it went between 62-69 C .. looking about this looks fairly normal.

Im still concerned however that im not getting a great deal of "air" coming out any of the fans.. how violent should this air flow be... very noticeable or barely enough to notice on my hand ?
