Anyone done a comparison of the two or considered the M3 before going with the D610? Been rearching both and the M3 seems to be the better buy but want to hear your thoughts. Cannot see both notebooks in person so hard to conclude anything.

I've had my D610 for a few weeks now and it's been great. Just looked at the M3 and configured a system similar to my Dell here and the Toshiba was around $300 more expensive, so you'll probably be paying a little more for the Toshiba for simliar specs.
Also, it looked like the Toshiba uses a couple different types of Nvidia cards while the Dell can only be configured with integrated graphics or the ATI x300, which is what I got. For hardcore gaming it won't do, but it works for the occasionally game I play (UT2004, Battlefield, etc..)
Other than that they look to be very simliar, except the Toshiba looks to have firewire and that PCI express slot. I personally am not a huge fan of toshiba from having several friends who have owned toshiba laptops w/ various hardware reliability issues. But that's just been my experience and by no means a general statement. But my dad has a dell laptop, I can get it serviced locally at my college, it was a little cheaper, and it works well for what I need it for.

I too have the D610 and love it, with reservations about the headphone feedback that's been discussed in forums here:
http://notebookforums.com/showthread...d610+headphone
Reasons I chose the D610:
1. Price (I too found it to be cheaper relative to a similarly configed M3)
2. I/O port placement. It makes no sense to me to have USB ports on the right side of the machine, towards the front (as is the case with the M3). If you don't use a mouse much this probably isn't an issue. I personally prefer the D610 port placement better.
I wrote up a review on notebookreview.com about the D610 (shameless plug):

Others whom I work with have toshibas and love them. They seem like quality machines to me, but I've never used them regularly.

mikemex, you base your comments on the brand of the machines you get in for repair but is your sampling methodology valid? In your country does Dell have the same market prescence as Sony and Toshiba. I mean do you normally get Dells in for repair or does Dell use some other service? Just curious if your reasoning is valid. By the way none of them are Japanese laptops. All of them including Dells are made in Taiwan/China/Malaysia. Sony made their CRTs in Mexico.
