Update on the 6800 Ultra

On March 22, Sager made an announcement that users with 85xxxxxxx series serial numbers would be able to install the nVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra Card themselves. Unfortunately, due to non-heat related issues, we have found that Sager will have to do this installation itself, and those units will have to be sent to Sager for modification of the unit's motherboard. (Reversion update)

Sager will offer a discount of $100 on the nVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra Upgrade Kit for users who purchased their NP9860 after March 22 that must send their units to Sager for installation of the card. This discount will continue until Sager ships units that support user installation of the card.

To demonstrate the heat distribution capabilities of the NP9860 with GeForce Go 6800 Ultra we have attached some photos of the fans used to cool the unit. The heat dissipation system in the unit is working as designed. Unfortunately, however, a motherboard reversion update is required to accommodate the nVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra must be performed by Sager.
Below are pictures showing the thermal design of the 6800 Ultra.

Is there really no way to install Ultra in sager 7620?
Sager 9860 & 7620 are quite the similar models..

Sager stated at release they were only planning on offering the 7620 w/ the MRx800. I am sure this is subject to change, but I am not sure on if and when of that.

So when one can order the 9860 with the 6800 ultra option?
am I cursed?
first, Sager drop their price the day after they shipped my computer so I couldn't benefit from the new price.
Now, they give a 100$ discount for those who purchased after March 22 and I did it on March 21.

Luke, for people who bought their computer through you guys, do we have to ship it back to you or can we ship it directly to Sager?

You will send it back to Sager directly.

How much of a temperature increase can we expect compared to the existing 6800? Dramatic, or nothing major?
when can we expect the ultra to be available with new laptop purchases? and at what additional cost?

I am going to guess that with the redesigned thermal design that the temp will be comparable, but until we can get one to do additional testing we will not have exact numbers.

When and how much are numbers we do not have yet.

Hi Luke. I know you don't have anything concrete regarding an ETA, but would you mind speculating off the record on a ballpark ETA for when it'll be available? I was JUST about to pull the trigger and now this comes out, and I'm feening to order asap. Just a bit of personal off the record speculation is all I'm asking. One week? Two weeks? Three?

I wouldn't know where to begin guessing. I was hoping to have an ETA by the end of this month but so far no word. I am gonna take a stab at it and say early april... but for love no one hold me to it .

O.K. I understand. To be honest, considering I'm not a hardcore First Person Shooter player, and will play mostly emulators and racing sims(GTR, Gpl, rFactor, Live for Speed, etc), I'm not even sure if getting the Ultra over the standard version is worth it. Can you provide a link to a benchmark test between the two version? I'd be interested in knowing the clockspeed difference, and how faster it is than the X800.

@ lizardboy

yeah it'll be great when the ultra comes out for the clevos. and hopefully we put to rest all these dell vs clevo debates. game (3dmark05, doom3, far cry, hl2, css) benchmarks, battery life, and temp/heat tests ought to do the trick.

if both camps score within the margin of error in all 3 areas... great, everybody wins.

if one system outperforms the other in all 3 areas in a statistically significant (+10% or more) manner... great for that camp, sorry for the other

if the results are mixed... let the flaming begin. haha j/k. don't know about this one....

but either way i'm real excited to see the numbers from both sides and more interested in how ati will respond to the go6800U. according to rojak's pot, there's a vaporware mobility x800 pro out there.

Not to flame anything but were we not told we would be able to upgrade the video card down the line ourselves with out sending it in?
Another question, when another card is available (EG:ATI X800 Pro or something) will we have to send it in again or will this new modification be ready for the future a bit???
