Update on the 6800 Ultra - Page 4

Come on, this is the Sager forum. Not the dell. I guess you'd have to improve air flow, and put in a better cooling in imo.

So how is the ULTRA testing going Luke......come on man we know you have one! Just a small leak of info...you can do it..hehe
post #63 of 170
it seems nvidia and ati are pushing the limits again....Ati is releasing a new x800platinum, and nvidia is working on a 6800 ultra extreme.

Of course, we as consumers benefit from their focus on outdoing one another every month or 2

Well I just cancelled my xps2 order when it was on boxing a few minutes ago.... ( i dont want a crappy screen for a high price)
I think I'm going to wait for it to lower the price or like propofol signature says:

Waiting for:

Clevo/Sager XXXXX
AMD Athlon 64 FX-57 PCI-E
with
NV 6800 Go Ultra/NV G70
and
17" WUXGA Glossy Screen

I'm on the verge of canceling my XPSG2 also. Hate to do it because I got such a great deal through work. If the screen is weak though, it is not such a good deal. If I can wait 2 more months, something really sweet may be out.

it was hard to cancel it man ..
but DELL xps2 prices are going to go down.. with coupons soon
or
there will be some updates to the NP4880 to match the xps2

It was a hard decision to take after i ordered some cool stuff for it ...

I'm hopping for other companies to com out with the ultra soon too.

And in 2 months something sweeter will be out. And 2 months after that, something even SWEETER will be out. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

If yer gettin' a good deal I say go with it. No better time than the present.

True that. The best time to get a notebook is when you have a need for it. I have the use of a desktop now. I won't need the notebook for 2 more months. That is why I thought about waiting. No doubt the Ultra will be in the 9860 by then and maybe, just maybe, AMD will have an option with PCI?
Smart man. If ya don't need it now, then don't get it now.

Awe shucks, I guess you know all about me and my desires. Are you and softcore69 like twins or something and have telepathic powers?

Dude, stay on topic or don't post, otherwise send me a PM.

Getting back on topic: hey Ambit, could you post links on the NV/ATI information you just posted above. Not that I don't believe you or anything, but just that I want to read up on it a little further. Thanks.

I have no doubt that something sweet is going to come out in the next 2-3 months. AMD Turion and Intel Pentium D's(dual cores) will be out probably by the end of next month so I definitely expect at least one new system from Sager or other vendors by that time.

I agree with you though, if you really don't need it, then just wait. That's what I'm doing.

Until then, the new performance leader is ATi's Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition. Let's just hope that ATi stays true to its word and that these cards will be available in more than just homeopathic doses. Even if only the slightly slower non-Platinum XT versions actually make it to the market in high numbers, these should still be able to keep the GeForce 6800 Ultra in check. Then again, NVIDIA is not just sitting around twiddling its thumbs - it plans to launch the GeForce 6800 Ultra Extreme, which will be offered by a number of NVIDIA partners, Gainward and XFX among them. It remains to be seen at what price point these cards will be sold, as the "normal" GF 6800 Ultra's price tag of $499 already makes it just as expensive as the X800 XT Platinum Edition. The direct competitor to the X800 Pro in the $399 market segment will be the new GeForce 6800 GT.

Given the fact this is a notebook forum and you wrote:

Have you had your head in the sand the past oh I dunno, 6 months? The XT PE and 6800 UE have been around a long time for you to just notice now as if its something new. I actually gave you enough credit to think you had discovered some new laptop video cards coming up, but to be completely unaware of those 2 cards for this long is hilarious.

I've heard a couple of rumors, but nothing solid or concrete from published sources. I personally doubt that ATI would try anything at this point to counter the 6800 Ultra, probably too busy trying to release their desktop R520 on time.

But if they are going to counter, they'll probably do it with a mobile version of the X850 XT. This is pure speculation of course.
