I think the problem is that they originally had anti-glare/matte finishes and then they were "painted" with something to make them glossy and thus higher contrast.

Just a guess but in looking at the screens (I've had 4) from an angle you can see that it's not a glassy smooth finish which you would expect.

You exchanged 4 screens? Did you ever the TrueLife screen?

I've had two LG's and two Samsung's. I kept my last LG and I'm very happy with it. It has definitely gotten better with time/use.

Don’t take what you read here too much to heart. Be your own judge. I made the mistake of readin’ all the stuff here and so there was no way I was gonna be happy with anything! First thing I did was LOOK for problems with the screen.

If I’d read nothin’, I think I would have been happy from the start.

If you start lookin’ for problems in/with almost anything you will find ‘em. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. Life ain't perfect.

Wait...how do you know which screen it ships with?

I ordered the 1920x1200 TrueLife WUXGA+ yesterday. Is that LG or Samsung? Do later revisions end up being better?
The WUXGA comes from both LG and Samsung. Dell used to specify who the maker was but they stopped. Prolly 'cause of this forum lol!

All of mine were WUXGA. The way I can tell an LG is that the brightness control (Fn+arrow up, arrow down) doesn't change brightness between steps 1 and 2 or 2 and 3... dependin' on how you count 'em...

I orig had an LG, it was replaced with two diff Sam's. Was really sorry I hadn't kept the orig LG. So I returned it and ordered a new one. Luckily it had the LG. I'm very happy with it.

It has definitely gotten better with age.

EDIT: Yeah the computer's not perfect, but I love it and I think it will last me for quite some time. I'm not a gamer - I need the power and gigabit cause I'm a pgmr/analyst, web designer, artist, graphic designer... I'm still awed at how easily it handles massive graphics and huge data throughput. Sonnabich is fast!!!

btw, I have 2GB of Kingston. I can easily run w/o a pagin' file.

Well I ordered my 9300 yesterday and I hope they give me a later revision display!

Well, I'm feeling a wee bit paranoid now. I just called Dell Norway and asked them to replace my light leaking Samsung. The call went pretty smooth, he even said he was going to try and get me an LG. Atleast then I can compare the two.. As it was, the light leakage wasn't terrible. I didn't really notice it unless the screen was dead black (which was why I thought I'd gotten lucky with my screen).. anyway, as it turns out, the light leakage was pretty much like that shown in some of the pictures in this thread. Not too bad, I certainly could've lived with it BUT I paid damn good money for this laptop and I want to get my money's worth. So for me it's more a principle thing than anything else.

Besides.. if noone complained about their sub-par screens, what would the chances be of improvement from Dell/Samsung/LG be? Less? I think so.

MonarchX.. I have the LG WUXGA w/TrueLife screen and I'm very happy with it. I wouldn't exchange this one for anything! Have run through Pixel Buddy with NO bad pixels and there was originally about a half inch of leakage. Now after 2 weeks I dont see any!!!
I use my laptop during the day but also a lot during the night without lights while playing games or movies and I no longer see leakage. I'm so glad I lucked into getting the LG screen

ShnikeJSB .. Nope, you should be mad at Dell for using displays which they know are crap! Dell doesn't have to use the Samsung or LG screens but do because they are likely cheaper then anything else. Dell could use something else but choose not to for whatever reason.

Should I call DELL and ask them if I am getting an LG screen?
They will not be able to tell you. I'd hope for the best and once you get it see how it is as there are many people who get good Samsung screens aswell. If you get a bad screen then call and really bitch about wanting an LG screen. I'm not sure if they can place the replacement order for an LG specifically of not.

Sucks...I hope by now customer complaints made some difference and they ship better screens.

The tech support dude I talked to here in Norway (which were incidentally Swedish.. it's all about foreign labour these days ) said he couldn't guarantee an LG replacement but that he would label the replacement request with something ala "has Samsung, wants LG". So atleast he tried..

If my replacement screen has the same amount of leakage I'm gonna bitch and moan them into upgrading to a WUXGA. Atleast then I got a better screen with light leakage

Is leakage noticeable during DVD playback and games? Or is just noticeable when everything pitch black?
I think it's only visible with a black screen... I've never run into issues normally. How often do people have a completely black screen anyway? Now if it's a darkened spot, corners, or edges, now that could be a very bad problem... but leaking doesn't seem to be a bother during normal usage.

Unless you're like me, and you have a black background
post #96 of 117
What if the screen is all blue or red or green? Wouldn't there be some sort of lighter/darker effect? On the pictures I have seen, leakage is like pure WHITE!
It's white light leaking, but it shows up with darker colors. You can see it on the blue Windows startup/shutdown screen, too, but it's much more visible against black. I assume really severe leaking could be more obvious though... I just haven't seen it.

Its odd how they say cameras make itlook worse than it is?
I think it's just the quality of the camera really... the lighting looks different through a lens then it does through human eyes.
I looked at the leak pictures, and at pictures of people using the laptop and the leak seems completely unnoticeable when the screen is in use!
