9300 LCD replacement: do yourself or have dell tech do it?

I need to get a replacement LCD (you guys know why) but have several questions:

1. When you have them send you a screen replacement (to do the replacement yourself), is it always refurbished? (I don't want a screen that someone else send back)

2. What if you have a tech bring a screen and replace it himself, is it also a refurb then or would it be new?

3. I am thinking of doing the replacement myself but I am worried that I am mess up along the way. Is it fairly easy to put the laptop together so that is is as STURDY as when new?

There not refurbish I think, as for doing it yourself, go for it, I opened mines and I never had a laptop before.... but I do build desktops so I think that helps, don't be nervous, just count all the screws, if you run into help im here to help you.... here use this guide http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...0/sm/index.htm , you don't need luck if you follow it carefully, you will be alright .

Well, I've read many posts on this forum about people replacing it themselves so it couldn't possibly void warrenty.

I talked with the Dell CS about this. Replacing the screen yourself only voids the warranty on your SCREEN. So, if something should go wrong with the screen again in the future, they will not cover that. The rest of the computer warranty remains intact. Replacing the screen is not a hard process, as long as you are patient and have some basic tool skills (do you know your clockwise from your counterclockwise? .. your right from your left? Okay, then you're fine). If you use the Dell Service Manual for the 9300, you'll have no problems knowing what to do and how to do it.

That said, I just finished replacing my LG with my Samsung K9922 and man, it's AWESOME. Definitely sending my LG back.

Wahoo,

The csr I talked to said that they would'nt cover any
damage I might do in the process of replacing the screen
which kinda makes sense but they didnt say anything about voiding the screen waranty
Looks like its going to be thrusday before I get my replacement. The first on(which was wrong) i called
on saturday and got it monday the second one i called on that monday and its not due til thrusday. arggg

It's very easy to do yourself. The scariest part, for me at least, was prying up that first piece of trim plastic. It's in good and took some prying.

Also, they may send you a refurbished screen. After I was disgusted with the light leakage and uneven lighting of my replacement samsung panel and I placed it back in the box, I noticed a sticker on the side of the box saying it was refurbished.

Think I will have a dell tech do it. I could do it myself but I do not want to lose warranty on the screen. I will be basically carrying the laptop to school everyday so definiitely need the warranty intact.

The screen may be badged as a refurb, but what I am thinking is that they just took a bunch of new Samsungs and badged them as refurbs, because all Dell Tech support parts are supposed to be refurbs. However, since this is the first time they are selling this display, how would they have any used ones. This however, might not be the case anymore as others have returned their LG's and Dell might start shipping the returned screens after a little bit of testing to see if it meets their specs, which I am assuming it will.

Are you getting any light leakage? I heard that is a problem with some of the Samsungs.

yea i have the samsung on right now and have the LG on the side, the samsung i have has really bad light leakage, when my screen saver comes out the one with the windows xp icon floating around in the black background , you can notice it really good. am gonna call dell tomorrow and demand a better samsung. if the samsung i get is the same. ill see what dell can do about this. plus am gonna try the settings dellbert has said to use on the LG with powerstrip.

If you read dell's receipts for any replacement part - they alway say that they provide you with either new or refurbished part. Its up to them. Personally - I usually get new, I inspect them quite hard, but sometimes it really is impossible to say if they were ever refurbished as they "recondition" them, which often really makes them completely undistinguishable from the brand new parts.
While taking the plastic apart on the LCD you may brake it, that's true. I never broke one myself, but there was plenty of sick cracking sound. So I always do that procedure alone, just can't do it while somebody's watching.
One more thing - make sure you get a nice screwdrivers. Get some brand name ones. The ones from a dollar store is a major no no.

At this point, a bigger issue for me is whether I lose the warranty on the screen if I replace it myself. I bet alot of people on here may not have realized that they lose warranty on screen when replacing it themselves. That is not an option for me so I guess will have to have the dell tech do it.
