1.6GHZ to 2.0GHZ Worth $400?

The difference between 1.6GHZ and 2.0GHZ is only 400GHZ. Just wondering if anyone can FEEL the difference. For the extra $400, you can just about get the 1GB RAM upgrade AND the 256MB Nvidia Geforce 6800 Go.

Completely depends on what you plan to use the comp for but if you plan to game the 6800go and 1gb ram will be far more beneficial than a faster CPU

I dont think to the 2.0 GHz is worth it, try the 1.86 or the 1.73. DEFINETLY get the 6800go and 1 GB of Ram is a nice thing to have, though I think 512 MBs would be ok if your not doing too much gaming.

It's worth it to me. That's a huge speed boost. But you can also get by just fine with the 1.6. It's not like it's going to be slow or anything. Won't affect your gaming.

I know from personal experience that having a gig of RAM will substantially increase the performance of a Pentium-M machine. Definitely more bang for your buck.

Same goes for video memory.

timebomb it might help us if we knew what you plan to use the laptop for as that is pretty important in deciding what sort of cpu will be best for you.

Just get the 1GB RAM and the 256MB NVidia instead. You can always upgrade to the PM 760 2.0Ghz CPU later on. They are selling brand new on EBay buy-it-now for only $396 shipped. $4 cheaper than Dell and you can sell off your 1.6Ghz CPU for a little money back. Plus prices of chips are always falling, so if you decide the 1.6Ghz is not fast enough for you later on you can upgrade for probably even less money.

I actually just got my XPS2 today, I'm rebuiding it right now as I type on my desktop. My girlfriend saw it and and said I WANT ONE. I told her I can get her something similar, like the previous generation XPS/9100 mistake by Dell.

I was going through the typical Dell Inspiron 9300 configurations and the difference between the 1.6GHZ and 2.0GHZ is $400. I was wondering what GAMING difference would be between a 1.6GHZ with 256MB Nvidia Geforce Go OR a 2.0GHZ with a Nvidia Geforce Go since 3D games are video card intensive, not CPU. (I'm not talking about MAME emulation for those who would say otherwise. )

The current coupons makes me want rethink about returning my XPS2. Quick someone STOP ME!!!!

Check Tom's Hardware. They did a series of framerate tests with different processors and the same video card. Sorry, but I don't have the link handy.

Huh? Naw, processors don't make no diff'rence...just buy the 1.6Ghz and clock it back to 500Mhz to save battery life...you won't notice the slightest difference in HL2 or Doom3...LOL...for cryin' out loud, just get the FASTEST thing they have! What's the point of buying something slower? Saving money? Pffff...get a job, rob a bank, or borrow tons of cash from the government for 'school' or something...

The Benches showed is average of 5fps improvement from the 1.6 to 2.0. Not worth it IMO, but if you have $$$$ to burn go for it. I loaded WWIIOL last night and it ran great! (a MMPOLG with 1/2 scale Europe..the biggest game maps by far!) The 1.6 has the performance of a P4 3Ghz+..nothing to sneeze at.

Someday I'll use that $400 I saved to mod this puppy to 2.5+ specs...and laugh all the way!

I would first consider more ram before considering a faster cpu speed if it is just a jump from 1.6 to 2.0. I would consider 1.73 or 1.86, though it is only a small jump, it is a max of $200 rather than $400. Then you can use the extra $200 that you would have paid for a 2.0 to get 1GB of Ram.

The Ram is very important
