s/pdif on 8890

Thread Starter
i was wondering if the s/pdif port on the 8890 was optical or coax. and also when i go to the volume properties the spdif part is grayed out and i cant mute/change the volume of it. i looked in the bios to find it to no avail. can someone tell me exactly how to get to it in the bios? or is there something else i need to do? i searched and found no clear answers, only some that said coax and some that said optical.

Well, I definitely know it's not optical, because there is no fiber connection on the laptop. The leftmost phono plug on the 8890 is the mic/spdif plug. You'll need the splitter that shipped with the 8890 to make the mic or the spdif to work as you want.

I believe that the reason why the volume is not changeable for the spdif is because spdif is digital, which would require input from the speakers as well. If you have any spdif compatible speakers, try plugging them in and see if that changes anything...

spdif on the 8890 is mini-jack (3.5 mm plug...like the end of ur headphones). optical connections use a toslink (rectangular looking thing)...coax uses a rca-like connection.

also u don't need the y-splitter to make it work...its only if u want to use the mic while ur also using the spdif connection.

go to ur sound effects manager in the control panel. click the spdif out tab and make sure that either "output digital" or "output digital and analog" is selected.

The splitter gives you the coaxial RCA plug for the spdif. That's just if you really need the plug compatibility...

If you set it to "Digital only" why is there audio on the lappy speakers?

digital only is just for the spdif port...the analog jacks are still functioning.
