Yes, the Hitachi Feature Tool v1.97 will fix the clicking noise on your 80GB 5400RPM. I did it two nights ago because the clicking was driving me crazy. I turned the acoustic level to minimum and there is a setting for performance which needs to be set to maximum. The later setting is the one that I believe fixes the actual clicking noise. It keeps the drive ready at all times which stops the head from parking (explained in another thread, I assume it is true). This could make the battery life suffer a bit but I imagine it will be minimal at best and you wouldn't even notice a difference. The drive is pretty damn quiet after making these two changes.
|another thing. it shows my total harddrive size as 72 gig. is the rest the hidden partition from dell eveeryone was talking about.
The 8GB lost is a partition setup that containes the Dell Recovery Image. If you ever want to get back to bone stock as shipped, you can follow a procedure laid out in the user guide to restore this image. I plan on getting rid of this and doing a clean install this weekend. Then I'll backup a true clean OS install to a DVD.
