"switching" questions

Hey guys,

tryin’ ta switch over to the "right" side. Interested in the 15” powerbook. Coupla questions. How do you format a mac? You know how for PCs all you gotta do is boot up with the CD? how's it done on a mac? Cause’ I’m sure when you buy a brand new mac, there’s a buncha stuff on there you don’t really need, slowing things down.
Like right after I got my gf her Dell i6000, first thing I did was format and partitioned the HD. Oh yea, can you partition mac HDs? Like is it necessary? I do it on PCs so that I can keep all my documents on one partition, and “windows” and “programs files” on another. But is that necessary on a mac?
I’m sure the powerbook will come with a buncha programs installed, do these programs come with CDs so that I can install them again after I format?
Also, can I just go to BB or CircuitCity and pick up a 512mb stick of PC2700 laptop memory and drop it in the powerbook?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

To format a mac you boot from the os install cd, and select disc utility from the tools menu - even easier. You boot from the cd by putting it in, start the machine, hold down the key "c" on your keyboard. Nice and easy. You don't need to reformat when you get a mac, ust drag the apps you want gone to your trash. without launching them.

You can partition the hd, although i find it unecessary. If i was working with very large media files i may do it though. but as far as documents.. the home folder is the place to keep stuff. That way if you need to , you backup your whole home folder.

The book will come with a dvd, it wil allow you to restore all the origianl software.. although not always individually - you can use a program called pascifist to get selective.

you can go there and get that ram.. no point tho, MUCH cheaper to buy it online.

Let us know if you have more ?'s

Unlike Dell and other PC makers, Apple does not load 50 billion pieces of shit onto your computer from the factory. All Macs come with a full development kit and iLife, which is iTunes, iPhoto, iDVD, iMovie, and GarageBand. They also come with several utilities and helper programmes such as Address Book, Mail.app, iSync, Preview, TextEdit, etc. PowerBooks and PowerMacs come with some software designed for media professionals; Art Director's Toolkit, Graphic Converter, Omni Graffle, Omni Outliner, and QuickBooks NUE.

As h00ligan said, if you don't want them you just drag them to the trash, but unlike Dell's crap it won't affect the system if you keep them.

Partitioning to keep things seperate really isn't necessary. If you want to cleanly backup all your documents and program settings, back up your User folder. My backup process simply involves me plugging in a firewire drive and dragging my folder over.
