this is probably a stupid question but this is my first laptop, i was wondering if the wireless card i have means i can take it like to coffee shops and certain book places etc.. and have internet, or do i need a WIFI service for that?

no unless you want service in those areas where you dont pick up connections.
then again picking up connections like wardriving and hacking is consider a
, but hey doesnt hurt to experiment

I was always under the understanding that if you left your wireless network open you didn't care if people used it. 
You would think if they are smart enough to set it up, they would use WEP, WPA, MAC address or something if they really didn't want you to use it.
