So will the hp notebook support athlon fx-55?

thanks
FX-51 is an old, and now defunct CPU that requires a server board (Socket 940), and Registered memory. It's basically an overclocked Opteron 1xx CPU with unlocked multipliers. So no, definitely not.

I think you mean the FX-55, released in Oct.04, or FX-57, which will be released later this month. Both of these will work on any S939 mobo, provided (1) the notebook is able to supply sufficient power and voltage, and (2) the notebook is able to provide enough cooling.
For (1), it's probably possible to play around with the BIOS settings and do a couple of simple mods to make it work.
For (2), highly doubtful, unless you have some kind of external cooling.

Compaq R4000

Best Buy temporarily had the R4000 on their web site. I ordered one last week for $1,079.99. This was the R4012US with the 3200+, 512 MB 2700 RAM, 80GbHD (4200 RPM), DVD RW (double layer), and the 200M IGP. They say they should be able to ship on April 18th. I believe Costco also has the HP model (ZV6000) but is customizable. The reason I went to Best Buy was because I could buy the 3 year warranty from them and it's just down the street. I'm thinking that they were originally hoping for the Turon chip but had to get something on the street. This appears to be 939 pin so chip upgrade should be possible if you want. All the customer support info is on the HP/Compaq web site if you dig deep enough.

I think AMD said the termal ceiling of dual core socket 939 CPUs will be no higher than todays socket 939 A64s. Wich means < 95W (or 91, dont remeber). I think todays DTR CPUs uses 81.5W, not sure about the 3500 and 3800 used in this HP notebook though, might be lower? That would make a chance for an impressive power notebook, with dual core 64 bit and dual chanel memmory thanks to socket 939. But with the 200M IGP it's like hitting a constant speed bumb in graphic performance. Maybe soon they will offer some better GPU option for this notebook?

Here's some more specs:

8 cell battery 4.4Ah 65Whr
12 cell battery 6.6Ah 95Whr

Sempron AC power supply - 90W
Athlon 64 AC power supply 120W

Max battery size is 95W

With Cool'n'Quiet the CPU speed is designed to be limited in speed due to the battery power. The minimum CPU speed it would run at is 1GHz. Here's a breakdown for the AMD 3500+ based on the following document

Athlon 64 specs

Example
Amd Athlon 64 3500+
  • 2.2Ghz - 89W - AC only
  • 2.0GHz - 69W - 12 cell battery needed
  • 1.8GHz - 50W - 8 cell battery needed

Looking at the Athlon FX specs in that document, it looks like most of them only have max P-State which consumes 89W so you could only run on AC power. The FX-55 consumes 104W, so it probably wouldn't work at all even with AC power. A couple of the FX-53 versions and the FX-55 have a min P-State that only consumes 25W, but only runs at 1.2GHz.

hehe, dang it Hardball, i was just gonna post that table to show that there are s939 semprons... the igp supposedly supports dx9 but it's still relatively weak by today's standards (i think it's the equivalent of the x300?) but since the xpress 200 has pci-express support in the desktop world, i would actually expect to see s939 pci-e xpress 200m notebooks out this year... =]

Yeah, hopefully, we won't have to wait for too long for that to happen. I'm actually hoping for a combination fo S939 dual core MA64 and the new R520 or NV 7600GT in a 6lb notebook later this year. It may or may not happen, but we can dream.

How good is xpress 200m, compared to 9700, x300, x700, etc?
The Xpress 200M is a derivative of the x300 graphics core.

Here's the specs

looking at the specs, it looks fairly impressive. i'd rather have an Nvidia card, but since I couldn't, I got the best ATI they offered in the zv6000.

hey, inteller, make sure you post some benchmarks when you get it. =) i'm mostly interested in memory benchmarks because s939 A64s support dual channel memory while s754 only support single channel...

I just got my 3500+. It's socket 939 but it's not the 90nm Winchester that I was hoping for. Rather it's the 130nm Newcastle. Why the hell HP wouldn't give us the Winchester ? See my CPU-Z report at Notebookreview.com

Hey there,

I have ordered my compaq R4000 with athlon 4000+ .DOes it mean it will come with 130nm core. Please reply so that I can cancel my order.Anyways I am suspicious about the xpress 200m GPu.

thanks
