My 9800 Mobile unstable now? FPS drop for me

Hi, for the past few weeks my FPS in Counter-Strike Source has been unstable, which I assumed was because of a bad update. But, for some reason when I run the Stress test back to back a few times, my score ranges anywhere from 50 to 80, different every time. I also noticed that the little graphic thingy on ATI tool is going from 150 to 200 up and down constantly, where-as it used to be stable. Another crazy thing I noticed is that my CPU score on 3dMark05 has gone down to 2000, where it was 3800 before. My overall 3dmark score has only gone down by about 400 though.

I tried reformatting twice, and ive tried DNA, Dell, and Omega drivers(Omega is what I usually use) with nothing working. I have 3 spyware sweepers that I run so I know i'm clear in that department.

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

PS - my 3.2 Prescott is running at 72 Celsius load, and my Vid card runs at about 73 when clocked at 350/300 and 74 at 440/380. They typically run 60/60 when i'm just internet browsing.

Err isnt your cpu temps quite a bit high?! I mean when I surf the net I run at 55 degrees.

I think so too =\

Mine gets to about low to mid 70s on load, I don't think that is the problem.

Have you tried turning off the OC and running?

What about reinstalling your mobo drivers?

Try getting SuperPI and telling us how long it takes for a 1M count. I get about 45s or so on my 3.4ghz. Make sure nothing else is running an your A/V is off. I find I get the best score (40s) with a clean reboot and letting it sit for about 10 minutes.

Try the 4.12 drivers..

are your fans on full speed all the time?

I run a Games profile on i8k to keep my fans on higher, so their at 11000 - 140000 most of the time.

I'll try the mobo drivers and 4.12s

No fix. Ya know what's funny though, that little square spinny box on the left in ATI tool is spiking from 150 to 200fps, i've never seen anything like that.

Your CPU is getting too hot and probably throttling down. Have you cleaned your fans and vents lately? If you live somewhere where it is cold you can try running the laptop in a cooler environment. If it runs normally in a cooler environment, that will tell you if your temps are the problem. You may want to turn off i8k and use the Fn+Z+R functions to set all three fan speeds to their highest setting, 40. Let it idle for a while with the fans on high and see what you cpu temperature gets down to. My 3.4 prescott will get down to about 50C at idle with fans on high(40) and an ambient temp of about 65F(~18C). Get that CPU temp down and your problems should go away.

Can't you just use Fn+z+r and turn throddling off?

Well, the thing is I have been using i8k and cpuz to moniter my CPU speed to check for throttling, and I have not seen any. i8k tracks it and makes a graph so you can always see, and when it gets hot and CS starts to lag i minimize and look and it hasn't throttled.

One interesting thing though... When playing CS:S, I can tell when the problem happens cause I hear that windows *BINK* noise in the background, and then it gets laggy.

Thanks for the help so far.

i8k will not show you throttling. I assume what you are looking at is the cpu speed? When a desktop P4 throttles the speed does not change. The only way you can detect it is by using the latency tool that comes with cpuz. The latency of the cpu caches will go up, that is how you will know it throttled. So what is the *BINK* telling you? Do you see an error window or something if you get out of CS:S?

After this happen, please try running a SuperPI. If it is higher than remotely average, it will tell us if it is throddling or not.

Well, I have CPUZ I'll check my latency. I always DLed SpeedswitchXP and tried that, would speedswitch show it?

No error pops up when I hear the BINK.

Ive been having simular issues lately with my p3.4 version.

My temp starts at 55c and stays there idle for about 5 minutes, then its sit pretty at about 60c. Playing games like doom3 and WOW it runs upto 63-70c.

Ive been seeing slow downs and frame drops, what really concerned me was when I was in an open field in world of warcraft, i enabled the FPS monitor and with nothing changing on screen it was bouncing from 67fps-17fps and back up!

I done several things now, firstly im using an external monitor at the moment, ive put the laptop open on its side so the under fans are facing out into the room and the rear fans are not against a wall.
Ive not had much slow down since doing this but the temps are still high, ive blown and picked out the excess dust around the under fans and ive just borrowed some compressed air from work to have a proper go.

I will let you know how it goes tonight, my concern at the moment is that my fans arent going fast enough, the wind from the fans is hardly noticable and the temp of that air is hardly hot.

When I run fangui and manually set the fan speed to max its never registers the RPM over 4500.. is this normal ?

IVe not tried the function z r thing.. but will give it a go.

Cheers

So, I blew out all my fans and BAM, problem solved. But, for some reason the back right fan is blowing out more air than the back left, is this normal?
Okay I am having the same issue when I'm playing counter-strike source I hear the click noise in the background like internet explorer and sometimes the mouse arrow appears with the hour glass... I don't what is up with that, but aside from that CS has dropped to an average of 30-40 fps when it used to be locked at 60 fps. My heat is also going clear up to 165-170 degrees when it used to be around 145 so I'm gonna try cleaning this thing out in a couple days.
yes the right fan usually puts out a lot more air. I think it is becuase that fan 3 (the right one) only has to go through one heatsink, fan 2 (the left one) has to go through 2 both the cpu and gpu.
yes that is right fsn2 blows through two heatsinks an do not forget that fan 3 and 2 has different specs
