I recently experienced quite the quirky little problem up at UCF. For the past three weeks, my Linksys has been freezing up and locking up once every 3 or 4 hours. The same thing has been happening with my roommate's Apple Airport.
Last year, we were able to use the Airport with no hiccups at all on the UCF network (living on campus). This year, it locks up much like my Linksys was.
I'm convinced it has something to do with the firewalls built into either of the devices. If I set up the Linksys to operate as a dumb switch it operated with out interruption. But use it as a router/firewall and it would lock up.
I have heard of similiar woes with using the Linksys now on the UCF network. The Netgear unit seems to be teh only one that really works when connected to the network now, or at least works for extended periods of time without fail. I purchased the Netgear Cable/DSL Router with wireless (802.11b) to replace my Linksys.
The Netgear has yet to fail, and seems to provide stronger and better signal coverage for the wireless then my Linksys was providing.
Has anyone else had any experience with any of these routers, or heard of problems similiar to what I was experiencing. I still have the Linksys laying around, waiting to be used or returned. There's no a doubt in my mind that I'm going to keep the Netgear though. I'm very happy with the Netgear so far and haven't found any reason to become unhappy with it.
Feel free to post any experience any of you have with the Cable/DSL routers that are available right now.
Hrm, maybe I should just set-up the Linksys as a dummy open wireless network to confuse my neighbors that keep trying to milk off mine. :-)
