Painting Dell = voided warranty?

Hey everybody,

would painting the top of my case void my warranty? Or should I just get a quicksnap and paint that just to be safe?

Thanks for your help

Better get a quicksnap.

You know thats a good question, i dont think it would, as long as you dont spill paint on the inside. Basically when I have talked to techs about self installation, they say warranty remains as long as you dont screw anything up. This is a different scenarion though, but I would guess the same thing would apply. If something did screw up, you could argue it to the death, ya know like whats the difference between putting a sticker and some paint, it doesnt affect the internals at all. Like picard said though, it would be much safer to get a quicksnap. But if I had the equipment and the know how I would paint mine.

Chances are, yes it will.

Try buying an extra case on the internet and painting that one.

I would imagine they would say that the painting alters the heat dissipation setup of the case, and therefore it would be a warranty breaker.

Yeah. Better get a quicksnap then paint it. Or wait till your warranty expires then you're free to do whatever you want to your lappy.

i would love to mod the case on my m70, being that it looks like it could have been made in 1987. dell obviously has no regard for good design (whats with tiling the entire top of the machine with the word 'precision'??), but for some odd reason, neither do most pc companies. it would be a warranty killer, which of course would be unacceptable, so im stuck with the ugly casing. all that said, i love this machine. it runs like a dream and i do nearly all my work on it, which is pretty intensive 3d stuff. on a notebook!

Visiting the mod section would really help you out Zeni our lesser known moderator sits there still spouting good info on the 8600 which the m70 was originally based on.

Git a second chassis in case you have to do the return and paint that one. That was said, I just reiterate. Now, of course I don't really care about this because if I ever have to exchange a part, even the motherboard, I do it my self even though I have the home support - I don't want them seeing what I've done to it.

I have been wanting to paint a lappy for a long time now. I have painted several cars and I know it would look awesome. I just have not wanted to void my warranty. Good thing the XPS2 looks great already. Buying a 2nd case isnt a bad idea tho...dont know why i never thought of doing this (probably the $).
