Upgrading Gnome & font issue

This isn't exclusively a laptop question... Just wondering is there's a simple way to update gnome? The FTP site has about a million components listed and I have no idea where to start. I'm using Fedora Core III.

I also throw this one in too. Is it possible to get the fonts to look like regular antialiased fonts in windows? I have download the microsoft font pack and I have messed with the AA settings but nothing really comes close. The fonts don't look nearly as sharp as the windows versions and there's no consistency among programs, especially web browsers. I have a hell of a time getting the fonts small, but legible. I'm using gnome, btw.

Doesnt FC3 have yum as a replacement for the apt of debian? Or did I miss something there.

At any rate I believe there is an apt for RPM that will make that job much easier if you can track it down and install it, look on the CCRMA site and you should find a link to it(Besides I think you mentioned in another thread you wanted to do audio under linux?)

This may help: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xorg_and_Fonts

The font business is quite messy. I honestly don't remember what did it for me - could have been truetype fonts, could have been the X font server I am running, etc.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, I'm looking into it. I'm going nuts trying to unstall GIMP now. Of course the photoshop-gimp won't install because it thinks a newer version of Gimp already exists. When I go to uninstall GIMP from the package manager it says it doesn't exist. Well, it does exist. Good Times. ;(
