i have a Satellite A30 laptop, and was wondering if i can connect a 2nd hard drive to it. is it fairly easy or more of a pain then worth it

What do you mean by connect a second hard drive to it?

There are external USB hard drive enclosures that you can buy and it would work perfectly with the A30.

I don't believe that it is possible on the A30. I have an A33 and it seems to be one mobile IDE connector for the hard drive. The CD-ROM/DVD uses another type of connector.

There are other external hard drive solutions out there besides USB. There is also PCMCIA cards that allow you hook up a hard drive. But in the case of the USB, you are limited to the speed of the USB port.

that is absolutely correct jjng, from what i know the A30 is not capable of having a second hdd in the machine itself. i know that the A30 is a good machine, and i use the usb enclosure second hdd in my p20 and i find it perfectly adequate. i think it is one of the easiest solutions and it can offer a huge hdd space. it can hamper mobility a bit and it can mean you are limited by the speed of the usb port. even with those detractions i think it is a good way to do things and i would recomend it.

eBay is a good starting point

If you aim to put anything more than a 20GB hard drive in those enclosures I'd advise getting an enclosure with a Y splitter USB cable as the larger sized drives tend to use more electric current than 1 USB socket can usually supply. Insufficient power can result in failed data writes to the disk.

twaern,
If you are looking for a canadian store, futureshop and staples has them. They sometimes come with the hard drive and case while others might have the case only (and you would have to buy a hard drive yourself).

Also, many canadian online stores have them too like: NCIX,
where you can buy a hard drive and place it in one of the enclosures.

There are many types of enclosures/case:
2.5" = usually for mobile hard drives
3.5" = standard desktop hard drives
5.25" = for optical drives (DVD/CD) and standard desktop hard drives.

Hope this helps,
Jeff
