You must not be familiar with the 21st century of Mobile Professional.
I ride a train and a bike to get to work 4 days a week. I work at home the 5th. Backpack is much more ergonomically correct for my life style. I have my own corner office (no windows, to the outside anyway). Several other engineers here ride bikes into the office as well. We have a shower and gym facility in the complex.
If I were in Sales or Marketing and had to impress clients I might think different. But on a day to day basis I see no one except other geeky engineers like myself. My boss does not bike to work, but he does go jogging at lunch a few days a week. Backpacks are very accepted from my experience in the field, which is Software Engineering.
