the fans again

Hi all

My problem isn't really a "life or death" problem, but I really would like to understand this sometimes-crazy computer:

My FN+F10 doesn't work. At least, that is what I thought. It doesn't give a beep or any noticeable change when pressed. Even if I hold the keys for a little while, nothing happens. The only exception is that SOMETIMES I hear a beep when pressing FN+F10, but it happens six of seven times in the dozens I pressed it. Just to clarify, I do have the latest BIOS (at least I think I do...)

Now here is the problem: yesterday I had a chance to clean it, and I did. I opened the lid that covers the memory slots and vacuumed everything. I noticed the memory fan wasn't spinning OK, so I cleaned and added some lubrificant to it. When I turned the computer ON again, the fans (not the one that I added lubrificant) were sounding different (more annoying) and while I am working in a cold room (most of time) they stop completely once in a while. Just to add to the confusion, a little bit before doing the cleaning, I was trying to make the fn+f10 thing to work and I pressed it a LOT of times in different condition (in the BIOS menu, in the startup and so on...)

I understand that they may just be working as they should (turning off when cool, working medium when warm and just kicking in when really hot), but it is weird that they NEVER worked like that: they always worked "full time".

Also, does anyone knows what could be the reason the fans won't answer to FN+F10 ??

thanks for any help

I have the same problem, my fn+f10 doesnt do anything but beep.
I am pressing this while in XP pro, amd I supposed to press this key sequence during boot?

The Fn+F10 will not work it the both keys are not "down" at the same time or the F10 is depressed for too short or too long of a time. I press the fnuction key and hold it down for about a second and then gently push the F10 for about 1/2 second or so. You should get an immediate "wosh" as the fans turn on.

I do not know if the Fn+F10 works for 8790's outfitted with the Prescott CPUs. This would be a question that you need to ask of Sager or other OEM - maybe the reseller or a forum meber could provide further clarification.

I think I pressed FN+F10 in every possible way.. hehehe..
Today I made a great cleanup, opened everything, checked the fans and everything. When I finished and turned it on, to my surprise, when pressing FN+F10 I get a beep, but no Woooosh from the fans.

Mine is also a Prescott, so that might be the explanation...

I have a 3.0 Prescott and my Fn+f10 works. My only problem is my Idle temp is between 46c-50c!

What version of Bios are you running?
also you might want to call Sager if your fans wont go on high.

I am running BIOS 2.01.00 (I am not sure about the 2 last numbers, but that doesn't matter).

My almost-idle temps (measured as I write here) are 45C. In a cold room (20 something degrees) it keeps below 35. Maybe it is only because I am paying too much attention, but I have the impression that after cleaning the fans are making a slightly different noise.

the problem is that I cannot call Sager because I didn't buy from them. I am in russia and the loca dealer of Clevo laptops (called Roverbook) isn't really responsive or useful. They don't even know about the 2.01 BIOS....

When I updated the BIOS last year, Fn+F10 never seemed to work right for me, either.
