There was words that Asus will be recalling all Z71V that hit the states recently. Sources are saying it has something to do with the battery being to close to your nanner. A small leak have been confirmed on several cases...

If you know anyone who have their nanner recently exposed to air, that's explains it!

How the Hell Do I Start A New Thread???????

Sorry to have to tack this question onto this thread, but I don't see a way to start a new thread anywhere -- why is it so hard for folks to have good design sense and not clutter the screen up with this and that??

Anyway, will someone tell me what's up with tomshardwareguide.com's review of the Sonoma and DDRII/533 combo?? I mean, like, any word on when Intel will come out with a chipset that takes advantage of the 533MHZ memory? Seems like an awful waste -- not to mention big let-down -- to have a new generation of Pentium M chips that are outpaced by its memory....

Also, someone convince me to get the ASUS Z71V! I know that it's the best bang-for-the-buck, but that sexy V6V has got my head constantly a-turning!!

Well, anyway, I'm pretty sure I'll wait until, I dunno, back-to-school in the Fall (!!!) for Intel's chipset to be evenly matched with the memory...no point in paying big for the new Pentium M if the whole thing ain't all dancing to the same beat, so to speak.

That would depends. Intel have to balance out things between making it portable, low heat, low batter consumption, and still at the same time provide good usage.

Agree the 533Mhz bus is nothing compared to desktop being @ 800mhz and above. However keep in mind that a 533Mhz bus pentium-m 2.0 Ghz out perform a desktop intel pentium 4 3.2Ghz.

Yes you are limited by the bus in terms of data moving back and forth, but keep in mind it is a laptop. It is ment to be portable. All major processing which require a much higher bus should be done on the desk top.

Yes, I only meant that -- if I understood the THG article right -- it doesn't make sense, then, to do DDRII/533 with the current Sonoma, since it's only at 5% improvement in theory ("synthetic benchmarks").

BTW, aren't you gonna convince me to forget about the V6V?? It's an extra $500 for the look, but wow, what looks!!! Would've preferred more curves, though -- LOL -- the corners are still too sharp for my tastes.

The 5% they are talking about is

up to 5% increase between Dual Channel DDR2-533 vs Single Channel DDR2-533

uschou, if you're willing to spend an extra $500.00 so you can have a better looking laptop with 1/2 the video memory and 1/2 the RAM, with no customizing options, then go for it. How was that?

Hehe...actually, that extra $500 covers 1GB of 533MHz RAM.... =)

As for looks...the Z71V has nice rounded corners...just not as slim or light (though I don't mind weight, and a difference of 1 pound is merely a typical loaf of bread!)...and plastic gunmetal gray all over makes it look almost like a toy...sigh!

On the plus side, I do like the idea of having up to six hours with two batteries installed...and though I don't need the best graphics, having that Go6600 with 128MB is great considering the price!

Oh why oh why is the V6V so much more expensive?? Hmm, wonder if the price will drop in a couple of months...the Z71V is a great bargain....

Say, I don't understand something -- are all the other folks just "ignorant" or "nuts" in not going ASUS??? Looks like ASUS has just the laptop for every occasion (unless you're stuck on an IBM-style pointing device)! I don't know of one class -- desktop replacement, ultralight, etc. -- where there isn't a decent-looking ASUS with great features considering the price point!

No...the way to convince me isn't through dollars and sense -- I mean, what wouldn't you do for true love? -- but by somehow making the Z71V look better...for truth to tell, I'd barely notice the half-inch difference in thickness, or feel the 16 ounces extra, and I do enjoy the rounded corners, though that gray looks rather drabby, even if it is shiny plastic....

Damn it! Why gray??? And what's with forcing widescreen on us?? Some ASUS models give you the choice....

Hmm, am I gonna get black bars on the side of my games, then?? Bleah!
