Complete Care not so complete at all

I was considering adding complete care to my laptop. But after reading the fine print, it doesn't seem like such a good deal. Here is what I read from the dell website. and had to do some digging to find it.

1). Notebooks. Only the central processing unit, internal keyboard, internal hard drivesbuilt-in LCD are covered.


So its my interpertation that if I spill liquid on the unit, and fry the laptop, they would be willing to replace the keyboard but if the motherboard is toast then I am out of luck. My laptop has just been shipped, so I have 30 days to decide on whether or not to add it. Can people please post thier opinions and expiriances with the Complete care coverage.

All internal components are covered this includes the motherboard so if you spill coffee or any other liquid in the machine and your motherboard is destroyed you are covered, enjoy.......

are you 100% on that? According to the PDF from Dell only CPU, HD's, Keyboard and LCD are covered.

at any rate $99 is still fair for coverage of those items

I am having this exact same dilema...

I'm planning on purchasing the Dell 700m and I don't know whether I should get the complete care or get an extended 3 year warranty?

My brother says the one year warranty is good enough consider the 700m has been out for almost a year now and there hasn't been any mentioned defects so it's safe to say that Dell didn't mess up somewhere :knock on wood:

So do you guys think this complete care is worth it? and if not, should I do the 3 year limited year extension or is a one sufficient?

on another note, if I just go with the 1 year limited warranty, will Dell automatically notify me when my warranty is almost finished asking me if I wanted to renew it?

if this is the case I mite just get the one year and renew it down the road. Also, does this apply to the complete care? like if I just get the limited one year can I upgrade it to a complete care later, like within 30 days of my purchase?

Can I give you my advice? I bought in Feb 2004 a Dell I8600.

Just buy 1 one year mail and home service. Thats enough save the money. ( I bought 3 years) The first year shows you if you have faulty hardware like I had (ATI card and raining problem)

I was happy that Dell send someone to replace the video adapter. I didn't loose time. Mail-in service would have been horrible.

3 Years is too much though. After the first year you know it is running.

NO, complete care must be purchased within 30 days from invoice only.

dell may notify you by offering to extend the regular warranty, but do not count on it...you can always check on line by entering your express tag number to find out warranties and services.

extending warranty later will cost more, especially if you only upgrade to one year at a time. the cost reduction by adding 3rd and 4th year is by getting it upfront...the highest cost is for the first two years of warranty. there is no way around it, as i tried doing several different methods with the warranty department.

so if I buy my comp tomorrow and I don't buy the complete care then, I have 30 days from tomorrow to buy it?

will it cost the same amount or more? I know the regular limited warranty is more but Im not sure about the complete care

3 yr warranty is worth it especially if you use your lappy a lot. My I4000 I got 3 yr and used it a lot in the last 1yr of it's life. I ended up replacing just about everything for $0. And no I did not sabatoge the lappy...it just started breaking down and the tech they sent out once broke something too ( bezel around the keyboard).

So for me 3 yr was worth it. Now that I have my new 9300 I'm sending my I4000 to my mom to use for internet surfing and email at home.

I spoke with a Dell rep today, he tells me u have 30 days from the invoice date to add Complete Care. He stressed the 30 day limit and said don't call on day 31 because its no longer possible.

Actually..........looks like you're correct. (There seems to be some confusion on Dell forums. Some say, 21 and some say 30, but I found enough old & new posts that say 30 to believe it's true.)

Just be sure to stand your ground if they pulled any funny business declining the offer. If you didn't have the CSR's name, you could certainly reference Dell forums as evidence!!!

FWIW, I never bought it on desktops, but on my 2 laptops.........you betcha!! I couldn't imagine buying a Dell laptop without it!! My .02!!!

it's 30 days from invoice date (normally means shipped date) not the order date.

cost: it will cost whatever promotion they are having at the time..when i got it within the 30 days, they were having a rebate. I think the cost is $99 which covers the entire period of your regular warranty. so it is $99 regardless if you have 1 year warranty or 4 year extended warranty. you'll have to confirm the $99 cost though as it may not be current.

I think whether or not to purchase the extended warranty is subjective to each model, coupled with how you interpret the reported Dell services from members here.

It's really not that much money if you you're purchasing something over $2K. You're talking an additional 5-6% for reassurance. (Sounds like decent reassurance, according to the members here.)
On the other hand, you have to measure your own ability to fix the notebook yourself using used parts. It's a very real option for most of the less expensive models because after a year goes by and you need a replacement motherboard or palm rest, you'll probably be able to get one cheap from ebay. I built up an old Gateway lappie from a pile of busted crap this way for under $200. (1066 PIIIm, 512kRAM, 20GB HD, Wireless, etc)
The industry moves so fast that it'll render parts for your new machine to bargain-basement prices in only two years.

in all honestly I was thinking of getting the one year complete care but IMO I don't think it makes sense, you should just get the 3 year complete care.

The reason I say this is because whenever you buy something new you baby the hell out of it for the first year cause its 'new'. As the years progress, you no longer have this mentality and then you start to get careless, which is when accidents happen. Same thing applies for a car as well.

I think complete care should start after the base 1 year limited warranty because everyone is going to be extra careful with their new toy that first year, so the chance of you dropping it or accidentally doing something stupid is rare.

btw I noticed your from Canada, are you from Toronto by chance?

I'm planning on buying the 700m and since you're planning on buying a laptop already, maybe we can buy together and maybe Dell can give us a good deal or somthing
