Hi, i'm a proud new owner of 17" powerbook. I purchased it on ebay and my hard drive have some programs on it that i do not want like video editing software. I can't seem to find how to uninstall programs . I looked in the help section and even a mac os x book. I think someone told me to just drag the folder to the trash can and empty the trash. I am afraid that doing so will corupt my os with errors like windows xp. I know you can't do that on windows that is why they have a control panel with add and remove software. I can't seem to locate that on mac os x. How do I unstall programs?

Sassy is correct.
However, there are some cases where an application leaves the "installer" in the program folder within applications. In most of those instances, you can launch the installer and then select "uninstall" from the easy/custom install dropdown.
But there is no registry per se on a Mac and usually files are not placed all over the system.
The worst straggler you might get is an undeleted preference file, which takes up almost no space.

Well, .exe files actually don't run on Macs. To install something, you'll usually get a .dmg file. Mount that (double click on it) and a window will pop up. There you will see the application file (usually contains the software icon). Drag that into the Application folder. Then, in your Finder window, click the eject icon beside the dmg file.
Also sometimes, it will be a folder instead of a single app file. Drag that folder into the applications folder. When it's setup like that, the folder usually has music files and etc inside of it.
And, then if you'd like, go in the Applications folder and find your newly installed software. Drag the icon file of the app into your dock for quick and easy access.
Btw, if the video editing software is any good, I'd at least burn it to a cd first in case you ever wanted to use it in the future.

Other times there is an install file which works simialr to a setup.exe file on a PC... (exept that it usually doesn't dump files all over your machine)
Mac programs won't even be so bold as to put the program in your dock, or force it to launch at startup... and throw an extra "shortcut" on your desktop.
It just goes in the APP folder... if you want it on your dock... you just drop it there yourself.
