17" advice Dell, Acer, Clevo, Tosh or Sony ?

I am not looking for gaming features, just top quality screen and reliability (I am used to workhorse Toshiba SatPro's and IMB Thinkpads). Mostly word processing, photo processing and web surfing.

I am in the UK so many top US models not available. UK options seem to be:

AJP D900T (Clevo chassis) with P4 550 or 560, Nvida GeForce Go 6800, 80gb/5400 (with options 60/7200 or 100/5400), 1gb DDR2, WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen. 5.2kg. £1700.

Dell 9300 with PM 755 2.0Ghz, Nvida 6800, 100gb/5400, 1024mb DDR, Dell Utrasharp WUXGA (1920x1200). 3.6kg. £1550

Toshiba Qosmio G10-134 with PM 755 2.0 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700, 1024MB DDR333 RAM, 160GB/5400,WXGA Trubite. 4.4kg. £1799

Acer 1800wmsi with P4 540 3.2Ghz, ATI 600, 1024MB DDR, 100gb/5400, XGA Cristalbrite (1440x900). 4.5kg. £1269

Sony A397XP with PM 755 2.0GHz, ATI 600, 512MB DDR, 100GB/5400, WXGA+ (1440 x 900), 3.90kg. £1679.

Prices vary with Acer least expensive and Toshiba and Clevo most expensive (prices include 17.5% UK Vat sales tax).

Other considerations:

Fan noise: an older Clevo D870P I heard was very noisy(unacccepteable for me), the D900T was quieter with three fans. Toshiba and Sony in the shop sounded ok (but they were not working hard), I am not sure about the Dell and the Acer, has anybody experience of these amd how often the fans are likely to come on in office use (Clevo fans seem to be on all the time).

Screen quality: I am interested in sharpness of text for my eyes (pictures less important). In the shop the Toshiba TruBrite text was slightly sharper than the Sony XBlack. The AJP (Clevo) had good Xblack quality screen. I have not seen the Dell or Acer so interested on any thoughts on these.

Extras: battery life on all was pretty ugly, 2 hours with the PM's but one hour or less on the P4's.

I do have to buy in the next week so any feedback much appreciated on any of the above models on reliablity, screen quality, fan noise, speeds, etc much appreciated.

If you can get the Sony with the WUXGA screen in the UK, I would suggest that.

If not, then the Dell or Sager. HP also make a 17" WSXGA.

I personally wouldn't get a plain WXGA in a 17 inch screen at all. I think the resolution is too coarse.

Thanks for feedback.

I am still in evaluation mode and I have seen the Dell 17" 'sparkle' issues on these forums (the Dell XP2 is now available in the UK and they are offering double ram or a free printer, the additional 512mb is listed as incredible £330 extra so must be a better bet than a 'free' Dell printer).

I guess I would insist on the Samsung rather than the LG WUXGA screen if I went the Dell route.

Also on the issue of Dell I would be interested on feedback on reliability. Dell are keen to sell the extra warranties, but I have never taken out one of these with my Toshiba's that seem to outlast their usefulness (the hardware gets outdated well before the computer dies). My current SatPro is three years old and going strong, will Dell last that long without these extra expensive warranties.

Considdering your workload demands do not seem to be very high, noise, weight and quality seem to outweigh performance.

Ive been investigating these 17" laptops for a while now, and the following has come up:

The 17" Sony screen is BY FAR the best screen available. You say you liked the Qosmio screen better. Like you I had them side by side, but you seem to forget the sony has a much higher resolution. The qosmio does not have WUXGA. And then again, the sony would probably have a different DPI setting.
The qosmio also weighs over 4.5 kilo's which is rather much for a centrino based laptop, but it does have two harddisks (although perhaps not so good).

I am a real enthusiast of the Clevo D900T, and am buying one myself. But I need it for raw processing power (rendering and the like). Otherwise I would not get it as it weighs over 5.5 kilo's, and will run hote, and only for one hour on battery. It is the superior performance machine but suffers greatly in the portability area.

The Dell 9300 has a crap screen. Don't take the risk. Visit the 9300 forum for horror stories.

I have no experience with Acer.
Perhaps the Samsung M40 is available to you? You could look at that one as well...
If I were you I'd get the sony. Thats just my conclusion though, but it really has the best screen.

As indicated above, I agree with Exception. But it seems you can't get the WUXGA Sony there.

I've owned Dells in the past and they are not the best built lappies in the world. But they also won't suddenly disintegrate.

As for extended warranties, there is a reason all manufacturers push them on you. They make lots of money out of them, often more than they make from the laptop itself.

If it is going to stuff up, it is likely to do it within the first few days.

The Smasung M40 I have found in the Uk is:

Samsung M40 HWM 745
Processor Type Centrino Pentium M
Processor Speed 1.8GHz CPU
RAM 512MB
Hard Drive 80GB
Display 17 inch TFT display Widescreen Type WXGA+ (1440 x 900)
Video Chipset nVidia GeForce FX Go5200
Video RAM 64MB
Optical Drive DVD Supermulti
Wireless LAN Built in Wireless LAN 802.11g 54Mbps
Weight Kg 2.99
UKP £1676.00 (inc 17.5% tax)

Seems very light for a 17" also screen is not WUGSXA.

The UK Sony spec A397XP's only seem to offer the WXGSA+ 1440x900.

I am trying to see if I can get the 1900x1200 WUGSXA as you both recommend.
