ATI Catalyst 5.3 problems with 8104

Thread Starter
I have recently updated my drivers on my Acer 8104 to the latest ati drivers by using the mod provided at http://www.driverheaven.net/patje

However, I've been having a certain problem. First, I noticed a lot of hard disk activity and things generally get slower. Also, in Half Life 2, although gameplay is smoother overall, I have experienced some tearing after a few minutes of playing and the game just got stuck and temps went all the way to 85C. When I reverted back to the original Acer provided drivers, these problems were gone!

My feelings are that this mod overclocks the x700 to the point where the 8104 just cannot handle it. What I'd like to know is if anyone else has experienced these problems when using the mod at the link above. Thanks for your replies.

It doesn't overclock the card at all. If you run a program like ATi Tool to monitor (and even overclock yourself) GPU speeds, you'd see that the Cat 5.3 drivers don't change the core and memory speeds, which remain at 357 and 300, respectively.

However, anything but the original drivers have posed quite a few problems so far for this machine. I've tried everything from the Unian to Omega drivers to modded ATI ones and even DNA drivers, and it's been a mixed bag. Some work, some don't (especially the DNA ones, boy do they suck) and while some people have had a lot of success with them, others haven't had the same luck. I've settled currently on the modded Cat 5.3 drivers, and while they're fairly stable, I do experience a few more lockups (which is a few more than I had with the stock ones) and more fan activity. It's up to you, maybe try ridding your computer of all the drivers and reinstalling the 5.3 modded drivers again. Of course, you could always just go back to the stock ones, they run fine and so far don't seem to force much sacrifice in performance.
