Major Overheating Problem

I've only had my laptop for a week and a half. It's average idle temp is 48C when on the web or general use. With 3D gaming the temp jumps up to 63C after only a few minutes, and has probably gone higher because it's shut off spontaneously.

I have it sitting on a smooth, flat surface. No obstructions around the edges. I've propped it up in front, then in back, then put spacers under all 4 of the wider feet to allow more air flow. Still runs hot, hot, hot!!

I even took it out to my patio on a nice breezy evening. It ran a couple of degrees cooler, but still too hot.

Any suggestions?

Just curious, what game were you playing?

Doom3, Rollercoaster Tycoon3, GTA Vice City. It happens on any graphics intensive game.

What about half-life2? It has beautiful visuals, but I dont think it's as taxing as doom3. That's the only game I have in my computer.

The usual question is: are you overclocking the GPU? if so, lower the setting. If not, then you should probably RMA it.

my temps run to 67c when i play games like hl2, wow, cs, doom3, and it will not reboot. i have stock settings though. i would like to find a nice notebook cooler tough. these high temps are too high for my liking.

I'm not overclocking anything. I posted on Discount Laptops forum. They're telling me I may need to have Sager contact me.

I will try HL2 to see if the temps are still high. I paid $4k for this thing for gaming purposes. It will really suck if I can't play my games on it!

Try HL2 and let me know the temp reading. Mine is 55 -57 when running that game (new bios with fan on high all the time).

As for notebook cooler, I dont think there's anything better than propping up your laptop about an inch off the desk. That's the best cooling method so far that I know of.

fungo your temps are with propping up the laptop one inch like you said, right? what are your temps without doing that? mine is 67C.

I'm taking my laptop in to Sager. Fortunately, they are located a few miles from me. I am having boot problems - sometimes no OS, sometimes can't find a boot array. (It's set up with RAID 0).Sometimes it doesn't even complete POST. Maybe the hight-temp shutdowns did some damage. Geez! I've only had the thing for two weeks. At least tech support is being responsive, if a little hard to understand. Pretty heavy accents. They've called me right back twice.

Argh...mine was running that hot when it started shutting down. Sager told me there might be a fan problem, but I think it's just a lot of high-heat components packed in a small space. Propping up definitely helps. They really should have designed it with bigger feet for more space.

Notebook coolers don't do sheit from my experience. Just prop up the back by half an 2 inches and the front by 1 inch and then see how that works. But yea I heard the laptop goes in the shutdown tendecy on temps above 70. Mine are in the low 50s-high 60s range when I play halflife 2 (its summer/spring time here now). Before they were low 50s only. Laptop coolers actually INCREASE the temps for me by 2 degrees on average.

Yes. I prop it up and it stays around 53-57 while playing half life. 2 nights ago, when it was cool in my house, I got 40C reading while doing regular tasks. Gaming it only went as high as 53. So it also depends on the room temperature. It's best to operate the laptop w/ AC running (come summer).

I purchased a cheeseball notebookcooler without fans at CompUSA for $15 AND took the battery out. Problem solved.
mine got up to 83 tonite. then it shut down.

I prop mine up using hockey pucks. Runs a couple degrees cooler, but no matter what game or what setting, I have never gotten it above 60 degrees.

I use a pair of DV tapes to prop mine... never higher then 60

i was playing sims 2

Remember how I said earlier "problem solved'? 76.50 drivers and HL2 is blowin' up. I'm in Ravenholm again right now and I'm at 58c (In RAVENHOLM you do well to be vigalant apparently) when I get out of the game it shoots back down to 51c almost immediately.

I'll toss in Doom3 RoE and see what happens with that....
ok...D3RoE hangin' around 52c

HL2 must hate nVidia. That's all I can figgure. I think someone around here mentioned that at one point. Oh well, I'm sure it'll be fixed with the next STEAM update......and hopefully DOD:S will be there too!

Just a note, ambient temps can affect how hot your lappy runs, so it would be nice to know what those are too when stating how hot your running.

I have some new bios version (Ive lost track of even what it is), but mine idles around 48-52 and when playing half life gets to about 64. This is in about 65-70 room temp.
