No. All I want is, assuming I get into the PhD program I applied to, a laptop to last throughout the program. I will be poor during the program, so a lappy HAS to last 4 years.

(speaking of which i have an earlly 2000 desktop..Dell. and after some upgrades, more ram, new and faster hdd, nvidia 5700 128mb, it still is being used every day and can even play some somewhat recent stuff)

There is a bad ANYTHING in every truck load. Let's be honest here.

And using Dell as an example..... uuugggh. Worste company, ever.

Is there any chance that your University will pay for the laptop? One of the grad students got hers paid for, I think because she is a GTA/GRA. Plus when the professors here get new computers, the old ones go to the grad students, sometimes. Something to think about though.

I'm sure that any Mac made now will last four years. Will it support the newest OS and programs, possibly not. Will it continue to fuction at the end, very likely, but a bit slow at the end.

machines are like this...

if you can do everything you need on it when you get it, you can continue to do everything you need to 5 years in the future.

The thing is, will software ship that will make your eyes oogle out of their sockets andpush you to upgrade? Mots of the macs i know of aren't dying, they are being sold becuase people want more speed.

One of the main writers at spin has written 3 books on a g3500 and has no plans of upgrading, even though he could certainly afford it.

I can't imagine you being MISERABLE in 3 years.. but i would also wait (esp buying an apple now) as long aspossiblebefore you buy it. A LOT could be different in a few months - new pb, new ibooks, etc..

don't buy it unless you need it RIGHT NOW. and even if you do get a last rev g4 and they move to a g5, lenty of people are using the g3s now, and that is 2 gens old.

I don't know if they will pay for it or not. That is one thing I might ask about at the interview on Monday!

I am on a G3 iMac right now. I also have a G4 tower that I use for other things. My G3 still works fine with just a few problems. I have had to take it in to the shop twice. I would say stay with mac( I am a contradiction to that statement, as I am getting a sager soon) but as a rule macs last longer than windows. but then again I have to use school computers that max out at 233MHz with many slower. It all depends on your needs. If you don't care about the lack of games then go for a mac. but if you want to play at all, then get a pc.

Nonsense. <grin>

I have had lots of older PC's and just like anything else its only outdated when it no longer does what you need it to do. As for how long something will last? When you think about what parts are in the machine and who made them, the gaps are less visible.

I still use a P60 laptop. It works fine for the things I need it for. Is it slower? Sure, but Im not trying to run XP on it.

Suggestion: make sure you have a swappable wifi module or hope we still use cardbus style tech 6 years from now. Im guessing this is about the only tech related thing that could give you grief. If you get say a G4 or brandX it will probably handle most anything else UNLESS your edu program requires some specific software to be installed.

a word to the wise: do not buy a first generation apple computer. I, and two friends, have experience nothing but heartache and headache from being early adopters of first gen systems...wait for the Rev.B of the system in question to be released.

Mine is going on 6 years now with no problems. I just put OS X on it and it runs great.
