lol, how much battery life do you need, if you're talking about underclocking an already apparently-underclocked GPU? Sure you shouldn't be looking at a thin-and-light or ultraportable?

As much as I can get I think a sweet spot would be about a days worth (7 1/2 hours) of web browsing on a charge.

The funny thing is that most ultra portables have less battery life than mainstream laptops since they use lower capacity batteries to make them small.

I think the industry is moving in the right direction by using light sensors and speedstep type of stuff to prolong battery power. I don't see any reason why a laptop cannot be made with extreme battery life when doing office tasks and a beast at gaming when in full power mode.

-for browsing a Pentium 300 and any old 60 MHz 1990's video card will do.
-the minimum for smooth dvd playback is a Pentium III 600 and original Radeon/Geforce
-for modern gaming a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz and a x700/6600 GPU will get you by

So if a laptop can be made that can jump between the above 3 profiles I think it could rock!

I see. For some reason, I thought that, once you changed the clock on a processor or gpu, then that was it; no going back. Guess not, huh?

We have all seen the Z71v picture, showing the cooling layout for cpu and graphics. In this open picture, where is the SECOND ram-slot? If I´m to buy my dual-channel ram by myself, where to install them? Or do I have to remove the entire notebook-ground to reach the second slot?

answered in the other post, but quickly - 2 screws on the bottom of the notebook labelled 'K', then 3 clips at the top of the keyboard, left/middle/right. memory slot is right underneath the keyboard.

I bought mine from DiscountLaptops last week. 1.86Ghz, 60G 7200rpm HD, 512M RAM.The display is beautiful, it runs flawlessly. So far I'm really happy, with one exception -
A big reason for choosing this system over the others I was looking at was the advertised 4-6 hr battery life. I would have preferred the extra 3/4" vertical screen size of a 15" display, but decided battery life was more important.
After discharging/recharging the battery a couple of times I did a simple test, and let it run on battery while I watched TV.
The battery lasted almost exactly 3 hrs. This was with the unit in "Battery Saving" mode (CPU performance 25%?), wireless card disabled, no CD/DVD activity. All I did for three hours was use a web browser with a direct ethernet connection.
I didn't expect to get what they advertise, but I was hoping to at least approach the low end of the range.

more than 1/4 of the battery is used up from the screen when it is in battery saving mode...
in my opinion.. the z71v has pretty darn good battery life.. i've seen the toshiba m40 with the same video card not lasting more than 2 hrs with battery saving.. soo yeah
