try the coolbits regmod. that should work.

How is the heat output? Any hotspots?
Nobody really responded to my question earlier... Can someone recommend a site with good drivers and overclocking programs. Also something with a guide to overclocking a notebook videocard. When i get my z71v at the end fo the week, this will be the first thing I do. I want to see a true OC comparison between this card and the x700. Then again, I do think these 3dmark, and benchmarks are not gospel, and in the end if you play a game and are happy with performance then there should not be a problem. but I am a man and must get more POWER!!

Also what are good speeds to start at when I begin? should I just jump right to nvidia's rated speeds?

heat seems to be only near at the back not much else

Went ahead and ordered the Z71V in the UK today. Am collecting the unit on Wednesday (work permitting) and should have a preliminary review on Friday/Saturday (all going well!!)

Specs:
P-M 760 Dothan 2.0GHz
15.4" WSXGA+ Widescreen (1680x1050)
1GB RAM (DDR-II at 533MHz)
60 GB Hard Drive 7200 RPM (no SATA option)
nVidia GeForce Go 6600 with 128 MB DDR RAM
WinXP Professional
+ all other goodies!!

All comments made in the forums seem positive, however still have some doubts over the screen quality for use other than movies as well as the fan noise. Will report on the whole package once more is known.

That is a very low clocked Go 6600. More than likely not underclocked to save battery, but underclocked to save money. RAM wise, 500MHz BGA RAM would be less expensive than 700MHz BGA RAM. I'd guess this Go 6600 is using 3.3ns RAM while the 700MHz version would use 2.86ns RAM.

This video card used is really turning me off from this lappy. I'm having a nice gander over at the Gate m680 now... :/

How can I change my 6600 gpu dlock speed? Is it a screw driver job?

@chuck232 - Hmm, maybe someone else who gets this laptop should pop open the back, and read the ram chips and tell us what they are rated. However, I have a feeling that you are right, and if that is the case, I may have to look for a different notebook to buy.

@olli3 - I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but search google for the "coolbits" registry hack. What coolbits does is unlock the stock nVidia drivers and allows you to view/modify the clock speed of your nVidia based gpu. All you have to do after you find it is download the registry file, double click it, and when it prompts you to add the entries to the registry, click yes. After that, then access the video properties as you normally would, but now there will be a clock-speed section somewhere.

Well there ya go, 3.3ns BGA RAM... Umm maybe it'll overclock okay still?

geared2play posted these for OC (done with a 60 gb 5400rpm hard drive and 1.86ghz system)
http://ynot2k.com/phpbb/nfphpbb/viewtopic.php?t=57
Not overclocked
3dMark 2003 = 4436
3dMark 2005 = 1728
Z71V Benchmark & Figures OVERCLOCKED:
z71v 3dMark 2003 (290/573) = 5338
z71v 3dMark 2005 (290/573) = 2140
z71v 3dMark 2003 (275/563) = 5120
z71v 3dMark 2005 (275/563) = 2018

guess x700 has it beat on synthetic benchmarks (taken from acer 8104 thread).
specs of systems I believe were a 2ghz, 1gb ram, and 5400rpm 100gb hard drive.

not overclocked
3Dmark03: 5698
3Dmark05: 2269

overclocked (people even took this higher and got higher scores):
380 (GPU)/ 325 (Memory).

3dmark03:6115

3dmark05:2387

I wonder if we will be able to upgrade the graphics card at some point? How meaningful are these scores anyway..just bragging rights?? Can you even tell the difference between either card in a game?

I'm on the Acer Travelmate 8103 but with the 7k60 (Shouldnt affect performance anyway) but I am getting 6850 on the overclocked x700 (400 core, 385 mem) and it's stable. I bet I can get 7000 on this but I've been working and have not had the chance to play around with the system as much as I want to. Another poster is reporting 7200 from his Acer 8103. It's absolutle madness how far this GPU can be pushed, a gain of 1200+ on the GPU is something to be proud of

To be perfectly honest with you, the overclocked scores of the 6600 is a bit dissapointing, and I'm probably the biggest Asus fan there is.

How's the Azalia sound chip, BTW? Though I suppose it's hard to tell with PC speakers....

I downloaded the coolbits program. My 6600 was clocked at 250/400. Maybe this is why my 3dmark was low. Anyway I just done a test with 3dmark03. A few programs running in background and using stock drivers.

250/400 (Default)=4431. Laptop warmth: low not much heat
300/500 =4998. Laptop warmth: low, very slight touch pad warmth
300/600 =5286. Laptop warmth: Low again, slight touch pad warmth
300/700 =5510. Laptop warmth: low, again very slight touch pad warmth. Only the back got warm.

Ran very stable in all tests. Wonder if its safe to overclock the GPU though.

Just ran Doom3 timedemo. 300/600, 1600x1200, high quality= 46fps

i am befudled by how your 3dmark score on a non overclcoked 6600 beat ours and how you got way more battery life. I went back and checked the battery life after reading your post. Yes you can get upwards of 4 hous on it but on the lowest possible setting. Surely not running all the apps you had. I dont think they are selling different stuff in UK but i just dont understand how 2 people get 2 completely different scores on almost identical laptops. Hope someone in the us can do a 5th benchmark. We ran it multiple loops. Word of advise. Do not use cool bits on this. I didnt try but i ve had bad experience with coolbits many times. The later edition of riva tuner works great. The only thing i found extremely weird is that the closer you get to the max overclock limit the lower your score goes. Found the best combination to be 290/575 but you may try just a bit higher on the core. I wouldnt trust factory published scores and timings. They lie...simply put.

hmm just as I figured, they wacked us on the graphic memory...sad...but still able to OC it a bit..mine comes in tomorrow. Take me some time to install XP and other junk on there, but I would be able to do a first assessment on it.

By the way, these are the numbers from Toshiba Tecra S2 using the nVidia GO Geforce 6600 128MB as well...By looking at the numbers, nVidia SCREWED US!!!!!

Laptop: Gaming

Gaming is great! The Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 is amazing! A great graphics card and puts out amazingly. It doesn't show in the benchmarks but in real time gaming it gives a great smooth reaction! Almost looks real!

Benchmarks:

Aquamark: 36,584
3DMark05: 1548
3DMark03: 5134
3DMark01: 13,984

Yeah not as good as an x700 but who cares? Never underestimate this card. Especially seeing its sales in the desktop area! Another thing...the touchpad is crazy gay! You have to put sensitivity up to 100% and you might want to get a usb mouse if you plan on doing point and click games! Plus the touchpad does freeze up once in a while! But that happens once in a while.
