I purchased a Tripp Lite Powerverter 375 Watt. It runs my 9860 no problem if my car is idling or running on the highway. It should work on any vehicle. My fuse for my cigarette liter is 15 amp which holds with the 9860 plugged in and running 3dmark. I would buy the Tripp Lite brand since some cheaper inverters (walmart, etc) may say 400 watts but have trouble keeping up with the 9860. The only problem is the alarm will sound when I turn the fan in my car to high with the headlights on at idle (meaning the battery voltage is too low for the inverter to function properly) no problems with every accessory on in the vehicle and 9860 on driving down the highway. The fan on the tripp lite inverter is a little noisy but not bad, it is the smallest 375 watt inverter available. But the inverter and the 9860 work fine in my newer jeep. So the point is the tripp lite 375 inverter is the way to go. If you have any alarms/problems with the inverter then your vehicle needs maintenance (new battery or battery cables or alternator). Don't expect to use the 9860 off the inverter without the vehicle running.
honestly, I dont know, I just sell them, dont know anything about them, they all say they work for laptops, so im guessing any inverter greater than 20 volts would work. Your wall outlet is about 120 volts, so...
ok i went to pep boys and they had this inverter that is shaped like a coffee mug and sits in one of the cup holders and puts out 200W. it also has a fan to cool it down. i un-plugged the battery from the sager and plugged her into the inverter and it works!
this inverter can run a 27" tv, so it should be able to power the sager. it puts out a continious 200W and can hit 400W max (i don't understand the 400W max thing but i know it runs 200W all the time at least). it looked promising so i bought it and it worked. i booted the laptop with no battery to make sure it worked. i did not stress the laptop by running 3dmark or anything, but i think it will be ok for normal mobile use.
i just have to keep the car running. the inverter was making a disturbing sound when the engine was off. when i used the sager and inverter with the engine running, there were no strange noises and everything seemed fined.
i also want to add that i went to radio shack and they did not have anything there that would work. i tried one of their transformers that plugged into the cigarette lighter and gave an output of 140 watts and it would not even light up the power light or charge the battery.
I keep a 375wt & a 300wt power inverter in my truck & the Yukon "respectively" for notebook use & other power functions & it runs my 9860 last night perfectly, BTW mine have a battery save mode that shuts down the inverter if the voltage drops below 10.5v.
i did some more searching and found this Belkin® AC Anywhere 300W. it is listed on alienware's website so i know this is the correct one because it outputs 300W instead of 200W, but is around $60.00 dollars.
hold everything. i went out to the car yesturday and did some more testing and it turned out that the damn inverter blew the cigarette lighter's internal fuse so i have to get the car in for service and the inverter was faulting and giving beeps so i just returned it. i am going to call alienware and see if they gaurantee the belink ac anywhere works as it is supposed to.
