Regarding i9100 Video card

Thread Starter
i purchased my i9100 about 5 months ago but after i have updated the new drivers from dell, my computer seems to be slower. i dont know, it just feels like it. i have an ati 9700 with 128mb, 1gb pc3200, p4 3.2ghz. i can play warcraft 3, farcry, C&C with max settings without lags, but what bugs the heck out of me is that i get extremely low score on pcmark05, 1989 i think. i think it's way too low, any advice? i'm not currently overclocking anything at the moment but i'm thinking about overclocking my 9700 ati. how high can i overclock it to? and is it safe to overclock it? please help! btw, i have cleaned the 2 fans on the back of my laptop, the CPU temp is 48 c and hard drive is 40 c.

also, the internal DAC is only 400MHz. the 9200 is 450MHz, how is it possible that the 9700 is slower than 9200?!?!

Video driver does not affect pcmark05's score much. What are your 3dmark03's and 3dmark05's scores?

i dont have 3dmark03 and 05. but what is a decent score for it? maybe i'll download it and give it a try tomorrow.

and the internal DAC is only 400MHz. the 9200 is 450MHz, how is it possible that the 9700 is slower than 9200?!?! someone please answer this question. thanks

if you own an i9100 with 128mb 9700, is your DAC 400MHz? or higher?
Mine says 400mhz under adapter properties.

ok, this is stupid, why the hell is 400MHz, when the cheap a** 9200 is 450MHz internal DAC ?!?!?!? i didnt even notice until i installed 9200 on a friend's PC.

There is a thread with 3dmark score records.

Don't warry about DAC. It controls monitor refresh rate and has nothing to do with card speed. 400MHz is right number.

This thread might make some confusion because there are some similar numbers without explanations - 9200, 9700 (i9100 is good). 9200 is Radeon 9200, right? and 9700 is Radeon Mobility 9700, right?

yes and yes, even though it's mobility but it's still a 9700, why is it slower though. do you know if it's safe to overclock it? if so, how high can i overclock it to? thanks

No, MR9700 is based of R9600 core (at least what I remember but I'll except any correction). It has the same performance as Radeon 9600 Pro - it's defenitely faster then R9200. If your notebook is slower in games then a desktop with R9200, then you have a problem. But this problem was nothing to do with DAC of 400MHz.

I doubt if you can overclock DAC. Do overclock core and/or memory.

thanks VRT! how high can i overclock core and memory? please give me an advice on it, as i have never overclocked anything. thanks man! i dont know if you are familiar with OmegaDrivers. is it any good? should i uninstall dell's driver and install the OmegaDrivers?
You can find a lot info on oc in this forum. thread is good place to start.

Omega's is very good, probably the best. 2.6.12 was just released. I didn't use it for 4 month for now - becuse new ATI's drivers were released before Omega's of previous version was created. Of cause you'd better uninstall old drivers and ati control panel (and reboot) befor any video driver update.

thanks for much VRT! one last question, would the Omega's driver damage my 9700? i'm afraid that if it overlocked my video card and it may damage it. i'm a newbie at this. thanks in advance!

Omega's will not oc by default. There is a program called Rad Linker included in the Omega's package (you can use it with other drivers) which helps with oc.

Will overclocking itself damage your card is another question. Nobody will take responsibility to promise you you will be save when overclock - but many people do it anyway.

thanks VRT. btw, do you own an i9100 as well?

how much did you pay for the mr9800? i wanna get one as well but afraid it would cost way too much, and i dont know how to disassemble my laptop (i know dell's website tell you how to do it, but i'm afraid i might messed everything up). although i didnt pay too much for my i9100 but still.
It's not chip but you can find 10% or 20% coupons. Normally a tech guy will install the card, so you do not have to disassemble the notebook yourself.

i only paid $1100 with that 1gb pc3200, p4 3.2, 80gb, combo drive and 128mb ati 9700. if the video card cost $200 - $300 that is like 30% of the cost of my laptop, ekkkks. i'll keep this thing as the way it is,i can do anything and everything with it. thanks for the tips!

When I mailed dell spare parts about upgrading to 9800 they specifically told me that the cost did outweigh the benefit I would be receiving.

I do believe in it. But my mother-in-law came over for couple months and I had to do something nice for myself .
