Internet Sharing problems...

I currently have a network of 8 computers going in my house. The problem I'm getting is the internet connection. It seems like any 1 person doing anything strenuous on the internet connection creates massive lag for everyone else. For example...When I do a refresh on my server list for Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, it causes my roomate who is playing Wolfenstein to get a ping of 999 and massive connection problems. Or when I download something from a good source it causes my roomate who is playing Madden 2004 online through his PS2 to get massive lag. BTW I have a 768kbps DSL.

The issue as I see it is that the router is messing up or something. A game like Madden 2004 or Wolfenstein doesn't need that much bandwidth. But when something else decides it needs the internet connection it just squishes the other stuff going on. In the past with my Dlink router I never had this issue with downloading, just uploading. The only thing I could come up with to solve this problem was to somehow limit every computer to a maximum of say 60% of the total bandwidth so no one computer could hog all the download power. As it is with 8 computers and 9 college people all playing games a lot it is really hell. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Between the lot of us, we have 4 desktops with wired NICs, 2 wired Laptops, 1 wireless laptop, and a PS2 that needs to be networked. My current setup is that all the computers are in the same room, (Except for the wireless laptop). 3 computers are hooked up to a Netgear MR814v2 Wireless router (Which has the DSL hooked upto that). There is a patch cable that goes to the other side of the room where there is a gigafast 7 port switch which the rest of the computers hook upto. I was thinking of turning one of my computers, (I have 3 of the PCs and the wireless laptop...heheh), into a Windows 2000 server box and using it with a program like Netlimiter or something to give each IP address a max connect to the internet of 60%. Does this sound like a good fix that would work? I really don't want to have to dedicate a PC to this, but I feel the problem is to great. All my roomates are getting pissed off, and since I am the resident information technology major who set everything up, they feel like I have to fix it...grrr.

Smells like a problem with your Netgear MR814v2 Wireless router. Either that or your DSL speeds aren't stable at all.

My bet is that your Netgear MR814v2 Wireless router is not handling the traffic very well. I haven't used Netgear routers so I don't know how well they work.

I've heard that they were top notch, but this is leading me to believe otherwise. I may go out and buy a diffrent brand and try it out. I only paid $30 for the Netgear wireless router, (After $30 in rebates and an instore discount). So no HUGE loss, but it kinda sucks all the same.

That's seem normal for me. You will feel lag when one or more of the computer in the network use too much bandwidth, like Kazaa, download a huge files,... And the more active computers in your network the more lag you will feel.

It's not "feel" lag. I wouldn't mind if someone doing something nocked me down to 200-300ping for a minute or two...But for someone doing something as menial as refreshing a list of Enemy Territory servers kicking me up to +999ms ping...Thats wrong.

I installed a Windows 2000 server to share my internet to my network. After everything was setup and I basically just made it into a expensive router my network lag issues were 100% gone. I didn't even have to get into throtteling connection speeds. I guess the Netgear MR814v2 is a crappy router. Guess I got my $30 worth. I guess I'll probably get a new router since the PS2 can't access the internet through the 2000 server.
