buying iBook on amazon

hey guys,

thinking of gettin' iBook for my gf off of amazon. There's a $100MIR right now and the actual 1.2GHz iBook is only $994, plus, there's no tax!!! So all in all, it's cheaper on amazon by like $50 after MIR.

Are the machines that amazon sells just like the ones you can buy at the apple store? they're not like rejects from the apple stores are they? One of the reviewers on www.notebookreview.com got one off of amazon and it had a dead pixel.

Also about the 1 year warrenty, even though i got the iBook from amazon, can i take it into any apple store and get free repairs?

Just wanna make sure it's cool gettin' a mac off of amazon, cause' i can save about $50 compared to the price i would pay with my student discount.

Student discount at apple store after tax: $900 + $45(tax) = $945
amazon after NO tax and MIR: $994 - $100 = $894

would it be safer ta just buy it at the apple store? also, what's the return policy like at the apple store? it's kinda gonna be a surprise, dunno if she'll like it or not. If she doesn't like it and it's unopened, can i return it without a fee?

buying a ibook for amazon is very safe, the 1 year warranty is provided by apple regardless from were you buy it from, you many even buy applecare (apples 3 year warranty) within the first year of purchase of the ibook even if you did not buy it from apple.

make sure you check the specs of the ibooks you are buying form amazon to ensure it is the exact same model as the current revision ibook. apple provide amazon with their ibooks so you are not buying a different product, certain resellers of computers in general like to sell of old revision products at the latest revision price to make extra money but amazon are ment to be reliable.

if your ibooks dose arrive as a defective, all you will have to do is contact amazon, they may replace it or tell you to take it to a apple repair center.

about returning the ibook, just have a good read at amazons return policy. i thnk it does allow the returning of the product if you dislike under certain (and probably highly unrealistic) conditions.

i hope that helped.

The Apple Store will generally charge a restocking fee if you return it for anything other than it being DOA on arrival. They won't replace it if it has just a few dead pixels (think the magic number if 3-4).

Lots of people have reported postive experiences with purchasing Macs on Amazon (source - Apple Discussions forum).

i got mine from amazon. no dead pixels, great working machine. btw, u won't avoid dead pixels and flaws by virtue of who u buy a new iBook from, it's a gamble any which way u look at it. Amazon however i believe has a better return policy re: restocking fees, if in fact u have a pixel problem.

also, if u buy from Amazon u r getting more than a $50 savings. the $900 academic model u had referred to only comes w/ a CD-ROM, that's right, no CD burning and no DVD watching. the combo drive model, which is where their regular retail models begin, goes for $949 w/ a student discount. w/ tax from apple i would have ended up paying ~$1022. going w/ amazon and the rebate i paid $922 (2nd day air ) and in all paid $1018 w/ the stick of 512MB i tossed in there.

so in sum, yes, they are the exact same retail models you would get from apple. the 12" variety comes w/ airport extreme, the DVD/CD-R/W combo drive, and a 30GB drive. the 14" comes w/ airport extreme, a 60GB drive and in combo and DVD burner models, again, the stock configurations from apple.

personally, i'd suggest u wait a few weeks if u can. the iBooks are supposed to be getting their usual april update in the coming weeks. i'd be surprised if they didn't give the 12" model a bump in the HD department and possibly start offering the DVD burner. also, as some reassurance...when Apple release the new powerbooks in january amazon began offering the same rebates on the new models, so i woulnd't be too concerned as to whether they will continue offering them on the new revisions of the iBooks.

why can they do this? because it's thru rebates. apple gets to sell more computers thru amazon and apple doesn't have to compete w/ them price-wise, in line w/ their price matching policy, bc of the mentioned rebate.
