Why does HP take almost 2 months to make a laptop?

I was lookin at the hp lineup, and when configuring a laptop, their estimate shipping date (without any delays) is like a month and a half. Add a couple of different items, and its up to 2 months.

Wtf is up with that, are they that slow. I looked over to compaq, which is pretty much the same company and they do it in less than 2 weeks. Is this a typo or something? It just seems out of this world to ship laptops in 2 months when every other main competitor does it within 2 weeks.

HP is bad at giving accurate information on their site because they don't have the systems in place to do it (example: I configured a system, one delightful Sunday afternoon, with a mix of options that I knew would be uncommon. HP said the shipping date would be later that same afternoon....hmmm....so they're going to ship it to me on a Sunday??). Dell, on the other hand, has real time information linked within itself, with it's suppliers, and with it's customers. Dell is able to use this information capability to hold invntory for less than 5 days (I think the number they use is 3.5), meaning the computer gets to you, and out of their hands FAST. HP on the other hand typically holds inventory for weeks. This is one of the reasons HP is getting KILLED by Dell.

It's not your product, it's your business.

The estimated date may be wrong, but their hint to you that it will take a long time probably isn't. mofunk suggested it may take longer because of a faster drive they don't have in stock. Probably true. But doesn't their inability to have that part in a custom configured system quickly make them bad?

Sorry for anyone that likes HP. I don't mean to insult you or HP. Dell just has a great business model.

hp = LOL

build a barebones laptop in 20 mins yourself, i did, i actually did it in 15 mins, in 20 the HDD was being formatted in windows setup
