I will being starting an internship at HP soon and hope to use the employee discount soon aswell Anyone have experience with thier employee discounts?

I am wondering if either model 8230 or 8240 will be good with a discount? Seems the Asus Z71V is better for the price? Any other sonoma 15 inch widescreens out?

I will be doing web devlopement primarily and while i don't game much anymore i wouldn't mind having the capability.

I want widescreen and to meet or beat my current desktop's performance (A64 2800@2.3~Ghz, ATI 9800Pro, 1Gb ram). Cost is a concern (almost rules out the 8240) as i am still in college...

I don't know where that fireball graphics card would perform... my guess is quite well, and the x600 is below the 9800pro is it not?

Thanks for any feedback,
Peppe

Wow! nw8240 is finally available!!!

Fire GL V5000 should be on par with Radeon X700, but there are still no reviews of the machine, so the performance can't be confirmed. Other major differences are the onsite warranty on nw8240 vs. regular warranty on nc8230. If you are willing to pay the price difference for additional 3D performance and warranty, go for nw8240. Otherwise, you could save money and settle for nc8230. X600 is about equal to 9700.

Well, neither is as fast as your desktop. You'd need a Pentium-M that is about the same clockspeed to catch up CPU-wise, and even a Mobility X700 is 'only' as fast as a desktop 9700 Pro part...

Still the 8240 looks pretty nice to me. Other options outside of HP are the Asus Z71V or the Acer Travelmate 8104. I like my HP though, if I could get a new one with a big discount I'd get another.
