8890 Video Drivers

Thread Starter
I like to update drivers. I've been updating drivers for my 8890 ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 since the first ones that Sager posted on their website. As you already know they don't update the drivers too often so I end up downloading them from ATI's website and modifiying them with dhmodtool.

We all had the old problems with the motherboard BIOS that caused the overlay problems and made the video play funny or the computer freeze. That was fixed with the latest BIOS for the motherboard v10.

I've had that BIOS installed for quite some time, and for a while I've been having random computer freezes while playing videos. I have a multimonitor setup. Recently I've tried ATI's Catalyst 5.3, 5.2, 5.1 and I'm going to try the 4.12 now. I guess there is no point to updating to the latest drivers anyways cause ATI are not really adding anything new for these cards.

Is anyone else having these problems with newer ATI drivers > 5.1 ?

Also, what drivers are you currently using ?

Well, I Installed Catalyst 4.12 and I can recreate the problem every time. I open several windows playing videos and I open an OpenGL game that plays in a window. The game is Space Invaders OpenGL ( http://spaceinvadersgl.sourceforge.net/ ). After that the whole computer freezes requiring a hard reset, but whenever I have the TV Tuner playing at the same time, the sound would still be playing. This leads me to think it's a video problem.

Now with 4.12 Catalyst I've tried to play Grand Theft Auto : Vice City .. and the game freezes after a while.

There was a post about newer Cats not working past 4.9 on the 8890.
I tried 5.3 and got strange results. Went all the way back to 7.95 ati drivers.
If it ain't broken don't fix it...

catalyst 5.4 drivers are suppose to come out this weekend try them OHH.. TRY THIS when was the last time u cleaned the lint out of your laptop where the heatink is under that plate. if u don't clean it out every month or so maybe not that often u will run like crap due to heat issues. i was freaking out till someone told me to do that.

I clean the heat sink regularly, and I monitor the temperature with MobileMeter, so I'm pretty sure it's not CPU heat issues, it might be GPU heat issues, that .. I don't know. I'm back to Catalyst 4.12 and they're somewhat stable althought I still get frozen from time to time, it's not nearly as frequent as with 5.3.

Thanks for the input.

I have Catalyst 5.3 right now and they work great for my 8890.
Anyone download the 5.4??? I don't want to mess with these unless there is some definite advantage.

kalaban how did you install the Cat 5.3?
Maybe I forgot to do something

Aussie:

I used that mod tool DHMODTOOL2 that converts the catalyst drivers so they can be used on lappys. I found this doing a search on the 8890 forum.

I can e-mail it to you if you like.

I have the 5.4 cats using that mod tool and they work fine for me.
One prob though, No matter what drivers I use, (omega, both of the original versions from sager, and any of the modded cats from ati) the 3d rage tweak tool says my video card is unsupported. It wont even install. I would like to know how you other 8890 guys got it to work, or if you had any problems.
Thanks

Have been using Catalyst 4.9 for a while on my 8890, I have ocassional freezes when I play a video after playing a game, I learned how to live with them.

Decided to upgrade to the new Catalyst 5.10 modded with dmhtools v2.2. I've been testing the overlays and 3D for a couple of days and haven't had a single freeze.

So, my standard for 8890 ATI drivers are 5.10 as of this post.

As for the TV tuner, I'm still using the AVerTV203 v52031MultiLanguage version 5.2, downloadable from this webpage http://www.avermedia.com/tw/support_download.asp

Benchmarked with 3DMark03 and got 3357.

Pizza:

I tried using that modtool on the previous ATI update and couldn't get it to work.

How easy/difficult was it for you to use with the 5.10??

if it ain't fixed dont broke it!

if i wasn't waiting on a new power brick for my 8890, i would go in there and find out the exact driver, but i think its 5.10. i have never had any trouble updating drivers for video (well at least since two years ago), and everything is in tune.

in relation to the thread, i have not used my tv tuner ever, it seems. So maybe the conflict is between the tv tuner and the video. one day my 8890 will become my tv, i know ill find a use for it.
