barebone models to be downgraded?

i read in notebookreviews.com that the upcoming ASUS models (such as the W1 and W2) will lose their colourshine screen and bluetooth (and aluminum) when released in barebone.

this is coming from Justin with ProPortable, so i beleive it. i think that it's not good for business considering most people would only buy a W1 over the z71v because it has a colourshine screen. if i don't like the configuration asus offers, why would i buy the barebone if it doesn't have colourshine and it loses it's aluminum?

THat might be correct. Similar to Dell vs Compal barebone. You don't want to release a barebone that will ultimately affect the actual retail product.

The price comes with a sacrifice.

i find it interesting how the w3v is now available with customization and it still has built-in bluetooth and a glare-type screen. could this mean that Justin was just speculating?

Justin sources are pretty solid. The W3v right now is not barebone unit. They are retail units. They will release W3v in barebone units later. Again, similar to what they did to the W1 and others, they will strip out some features.

I believe the barebone unit of the W3 will be integrated graphics, rather the X600 the retail unit has now.

So there is a good chance the barebone unit will be different than the retail units. Keep in mind the OEM division and Retail Division are two separated business units under Asus, they don't want to create competition between each other, thus losing sales.

The reason for the barebone units is to allow more options for people who want a full customizable Asus laptop. The warranty between the two will be different as well.

If Toshiba, Acer, or even Sony for that matter were to have a OEM market selling barebone, I am sure they will follow the same approach as they don't want to give compeition to their retail version. If it is exactly the same, heck people will rather buy the barebone and get parts from other places to build a nice Sony FS550 w/o having to pay the arm and leg for the FS550

Another thing to keep in mind, all of the information now are subject to change. Asus have been known to change their mind on things several time during the process. So until the actual product is released, it is still debatable.

Justin source is directly from Asus, but again Asus could change their mind any given time.

Also another thing to keep in mind and you should go over to www.notebookreview.com to read up on it.

THere is a huge debate and argument around the warranty covered by Asus if their original system been modified (i.e. add memory). So you want to look into it more carefully.

Just got an email this evening and nothing is finalized, but I have more information about the barebone. I think this is kind of up in the air, but as of right now, the barebone will look like this.

1. No color shine screen
2. No aluminum and carbon fiber - just carbon fiber (i think).. don't think it could be plastic and stay that small and light.
3. No bluetooth
and here is the kicker.
4. No dedicated graphics.

The barebone is going to be situated just above the price of the M5. It's still going to be a light, solid system..... a step up from the M5, but it's not going to be a system for everyone. The barebone is meant to be put in a different class - type of user - budget of user - than the complete models.

Like I said, this is sort of up in the air, but they do have to order a different notebook so that it doesn't compete with the high end complete model. From what I know now, the V6 may not come as a barebone at all, but the W1 and W2 will. The W1 and W2 may lose bluetooth and the color shine screen....... the color shine whats going on the new W1...... it'll most likely have the screen currently on the W1 on the barebone... lid and palmrest of the W1 and W2 barebones will be a carbonfiber, similar to the M6. These will be great barebones, but for those who like the look of the aluminum, you might have to special order some lids and palmrests from us down the road.... since the design is the same, the parts will fit, but won't be something that is standard.

Thanks,
Justin

but you can choose the cpu (1.86/2/2.13GHz)
it has glaretype lcd
you can choose hard drive (60@5400/60@7200/80@5400/100@5400)
and the memory
what else would you be able to configure with a barebone? i'm confused.

This is probably Agear swapping these parts.
