Dell 6000D - First Impressions

There are a few post here already reviewing the Dell 6000 and some great photos. I'll address most of the concerns raised and my impressions.

Dell? Not my first choice of a PC Mfg. I'd say Dell was at the bottom of a short list. I came around because I could get the notebook with the features I wanted plus using a Dell 35%off coupon, the price was right. Ordered the 6000 on April 1st and received it on April 6th.

Build Quality? Excellent from what I can tell. Looks good and the white plastic that I've read a compliant about reminds me of the IPod type white plastic. Doesn't bother me. My concern is how long will it stay bright white?

Software? Too little of the good stuff, too many of the titles I have no use for. I've cleaned up the sys tray and desktop. Housekeeping is necessary. I'd like it better if they gave me the disks and let me install what I wanted. I have to give Dell a D- for the lack of disks for their software. Even Windows XP disk wasn't included. We are given a restore function which should, in theory bring the system back if there should be a disaster. Windows updates needed "18 of them". All went smooth.

The LCD Screen? I picked the WUXGA before reading all of the negative feedback about the screen fonts being too small to read or of poor quality when the font size is adjusted. I also read that screen was too bright and has a disturbing sparkle effect. Ok, 1920x1200 isn't comfortable reading using a screen font at 96DPI but boy what crisp characters. I could easily read the text when I got close enough too the screen. I did adjust to 120 DPI and find that acceptable in most conditions. No sparkles at all. The screen brightness is just right out of the box. If I was going to adjust anything I would make it brighter. The screen can be viewed from most angles however brightness does drop off. There is an anti-glare feature - no glare with two windows directly behind my back. Graphics are glorious! My 17" LCD on my desktop computer looks like crap after looking at the Dell screen.

Heat, Noise - Warm but not hot. I could hear the fan until I turned on my desktop. The Dell is quiet, not silent. He ain't heavy, he's my dell computer. I wouldn't want to lug this puppy around during rush hour. That's where the PDA wins

Preformance? - Too soon to tell but it took forever to boot the first couple of times because of all the Dell Software that had to be registered or responded to in some way or another. I chose the 1.86 Pentium M Sonoma. The hard drive does appear to be on the slower side. 5400 RPM 80 Gig but again this is just a first impression.

If the Dell 6000d holds up as well as it looks, I'm going to be happy with my choice. The Dell 6000D is betten than expected - Dude I got a Dell (what a surprise that was to me) and am glad I did

I'm not glad about mine (my wife's, actually). I'm noticing that an odd line forms in the midde of the screen, like a fold, when scrolling down web pages. It's as if the card cannot redraw the whole screen fast enough. And sometimes when I drag a window across the screen, it stutters (draws window box not smoothly moving, but here, then here, then here).

Woweee, this is the crappiest PC Dell has ever sold!

Are these two reviews really talking about the same computer?
You betcha. The only difference is that I have no vested interest in loving this machine. Most reviews are written by people in love with their new toy.

MarkAm,
from all the negative responses in multiple posts it looks like you have more a vested interest in trolling and trying to incite trouble.

If you're so unhappy with your laptop then return it. Oh wait, that's right, in your other post putting down the I6000 you said "I don't have the patience to play "return roulette" with Dell." ...

Take your venom somwhere else.

I'll be as acerbic as I like, sonny.

First post here, so go easy.... I have just purchased a Dell 6000 (Haven't taken delivery yet) and have some questions that some of you may be able to answer from your research. First of all, it's a Costco deal - don't know if that's good or bad, but the price is $1299.00. Dell Inspiron 6000, 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD, 8X DVD+/-, 15.4 WXGA (I know, I know - should get at least the next one up, but it's pre-packaged, what can I do?) Integrated Intel graphics, Intel 2915 wireless, yada, yada, yada.
My question is, and get ready to roll your eyes.....Is it the separate ATI graphics card that changes the 6000 to a 6000D?- or are there other differences. The Costco description doesn't make the distinction as to whether or not it's a "D". Even on the Dell website, I can't seem to find the option to configure an Inspiron as a 6000D.
Can ya' help a poor ol' guy?

Thanks, Dean

The discrete graphics makes it a 6000D. That's not too bad of a deal though. But try and configure the same one on the Dell site and compare prices. You might be able to get money back or a better computer for the same price.

Speedee,
Yeah, I've tried configuring it online at Dell, even with our corporate program, but with all the extras included in the one I bought (better battery, warranty, carrying case, ext. floppy, XP Pro, etc.) the price still comes out about $200.00 less.
Do you really think I'll miss the better display resolution and graphics card? Since I'm primarily using it for business, my inclination is that I won't.
Thanks for the reply and input,
Dean

Oh, by the way.......I'm "coupon-challenged", so that might be part of my problem with regard to price. I wouldn't mind configuring it myself at Dell.com, but without a good coupon, the system I put together comes out even higher. I guess I'll just leave well enough alone - spending too much time online second-guessing my decision.

Most of you guys with negative review really don't know what you're talking about. If the screen is "stuttery" then you got the unit with the on-chip graphics. The Dell 6000 also is sold with a dedicated graphics chip. If you had got that, then you'd be feeling and seeing things quite differently. KNOW WHAT YOU BUY!!!!

Dell is an awesome company. Their equipment is the most stable, suprise-free equipment you can buy. I've bought thousands of computers in my life. Dell has come through with less trouble than any other system maker on earth. Period. If you want perfection? Don't buy a computer, from anyone. If you want something that is close to perfect, first read ALL the messages here, especially from the most knowledgable, and then make sure to know exactly what you are getting.

scott, listen to my heartfelt message (see attachment)

Wow pjordon, it looks like I ordered almost the same setup as you. I hope that my review can be as positive as yours. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on this laptop. Mine should be showing up Friday or Monday.

I'm really hoping mine will perform on about the same level as my current desktop. (P4 3.0ghz, 512 Ram, 5200FX graphics)

Judging by the benchmark numbers I've seen, and the ones I've run on this system, I don't think they should be too far off. Granted, I know the bottle neck in this system is my GFX card. But I've played HL2 all the way through without too many Problems, if this laptop can do that, I'll be happy.

Only question I have for you is, how much ram do you have in your system?
I'll have 1 256 chip at 400mhz, and 1 512 at 533mhz. In a few weeks i'm going to swap out the 256 for another 512 at 533 so I can take advantage of the Dual Channel and the higher bus speeds. But i'm going to have to wait another paycheck or two

On a side note... Mark, why don't you take this into a thread of your own instead of cluttering up someone's review.

Second Impression -Dell I6000D

I've only been playing around with the lappy so far. I've not had to put it though its paces with any critical business needs. I have come to the conclusion that I have made a couple of mistakes when making my selection choices.

- Getting the WUXGA screen (mine is perfect, no glare, no dead pixels and looks great) but 1920x1280 is overkill on a lappy.
- Faster CPU would be my choice today rather than the WUXGA screen if I was trading dollars.
- I was set on getting a desktop replacement, not a game machine so I am still happy to with choice of the 6000D. Specs aside, I don't enjoy the machine in my lap for very long. On the desk it is great. Now I wish I would have gone for an ultra light for portability. Lappy 2?
- Hard Dive - 80 Gig drive isn't 5400 RPM as I assumed. Dell posted the speed of their 7200 RPM model. Shame on dell for not posting the ugly specs, 4,000 something RPM of the 80 gig model shipped. Shame on Dell but surprised? "NOT"
- Build and looks - I still think the build quality is great and I like the looks. Solid like a rock or just feels like one? Time will tell that one.
- Graphics card? ATI quotes this as being a good choice for a balance between performance and battery life. There is more additional information on the ATI website describing the virtues of the x300 card included on the Dell 6000D. Battery life is an important consideration to me. With that in mind, I think Dell made a good choice. I wanted the lappy to last from SF to NY - all 5 plus hours. 2, 3, and 4 hour batter life didn't meet my needs. Should I have considered extra batteries? "YUP"
- I haven't run a true test of battery life. With the 9 cell battery I get over 5.5 hours but I can't say how much more. So now that I have the battery life, I've already mentioned I wouldn't want the lappy in my lap for anywhere near that long - on by back or shoulder either.

I don't have any complaints about the Dell I6000D - all of my complaints are about the choices I made I struggled with returning the unit but for what?. I don't know what I would do different but I'm pretty sure I will now want an ultra portable for tavel and will want a desktop replacement for home use.

Buying from costco is the perfect way to buy it. If you decide in six months that you don't like it, just take it in to the nearest store and they will hand you the refund in cash. No better way to buy a computer (or anything else for that matter).
