I can't get Half Life 2 to run

I am trying to play Half life 2 via Steam. I have downloaded the game and the computer locks up after it starts loading. I have a loaded 9300 but with 512mb of memory.

Are you sure its locked up...might just be reallllllly slooooowwwww.

512Mb is very low for HalfLife...especially at high resolutions. HL2 was nearly unplayable at 1440 res with 256Mb. I'm running 1.2Gb now and it is smoooooth.

I have 512mb ram and a Geforce ti4800 on my desktop and it played fine. In fact, I might as well go to the length of saying it played. . ."alright"!!

But, that was at 800x600. . .hahahahaha.

i have a ti4200 (oc'd to something, i forgot) and i am able to play half life at 1280 * 1024 at medium/high setting no prob (as in like 35-40fps average)

edit: and 512mb ram

he was talking about HL2 not everquest 2........lol...

i played HL2 on my desktop with 512mb and only a geforce fx 5500(now a 6200)
and it ran perfectly fine

HL-2 requires tons more resources than EQ2. I played eq2 with a radeon 9000 flawlessly everything set to mid range. HL-2 would'nt even run at its lowest setting on a 9000
post #7 of 16
Well, my desktop computer can run it OK on lowest settings and 800x600. Looks like my Radeon 9800pro can handle it well, but my processor and memory can't....

Maybe because it's a P3 800 with 256 PC133 SDRAM hahaha

I sooo need a i9300 :P

Try to search there... also, try to validate the Steam cache files: http://www.steampowered.com/index.p...hive=yes&id=351

Btw... 512Mb should be enough for HL2, although 1Gb is preferable.

I attempted to run the game again this morning. It now runs. It just took forever to load (around 10 minutes). I will upgrade the memory in a couple of months. I need to pay off the computer first.

I would have to say that it will play MUCH better with more ram. I would say 1 gb is the minimum for games like HL2.

two cents.

Steam was probably updating or something...

The reason it took forever to load the first time was because it was not finished all the way...It may say done but if you check the steam monitor its still gathering the rest of the game to make it offline ready....Half life 2 always takes forever to load....I would still recomend 1 gig though...for any gaming...

I've got a 512mb i9300 with the Nvidia. HL2 runs fine. The only problem I've had is getting offline mode to work (nother story there...). The levels do take a bit to load (maybe 30secs tops) which I understand is proportional to memory capacity. But in-game performance has been fine.

But I am planning to pick up a second 512mb stick to expand up to 1g - largely to pep up the HL2 level loads. I don't really need it, it's just an incremental upgrade that doesn't cost much. And I figure most games down the road will also have obnoxioiusly high ram assumptions.

LOL you must be thinking of a different EQ2. EVERQUEST 2, there's no way in hell you're running in balanced mode on a Radeon 9000... NO WAY IN HELL (infact, can you even load EQ2 with that card? seriously, i don't think you can... i know the MX won't work).

Im having a problem with my xps 2 as well in HL2. I have the 5400 rpm hardrive and only 512 ram, and if i put settings even decently high .. no aa af or anything game is really choppy.

With medium settings it still hiccups every 10 seconds or so. Infact most every is running failry slow. I have a gig of ram on order, but i was not expecting some serious performnace out of this. It seems to be lacking.

Any ideas? 3d mark05 ran a 5 k out of box so
I dont think gpu is the issure. I reformatted loaded all new drivers, and im still get not so stellar performace. Thinking could be hardware issue, but no idea. Anywho any ideas you have would be great thanks
