XPS2 technical issues. (help please)

All calls to tech support have been positive. Wait time less than 5 minutes.
But on of the problem persists. I am wondering if anyone else has had these problems.

Problem 1: RESOLVED (but worth mentioning)
Upon delivery DVD(+RW/-RW) drive was physically not sliding in and out.
When pressing Eject button I hear a click but no movement. If i used a butter knive to pry it out gently it would open. It was functional and used it in this state to install many programs.
Called Tech support. He was about to send me a new drive when he asked me to pop it out and look at it. I had to pry it out a little after taking the screws out. It looked perfectly new and not bent anymore. He said put it back in and I did. It worked flawlessly. Turns out whoever put it in the last time did not get it in square and this cause the metal casing to bend. That caused friction on the plastic of the tray which made it not eject properly.
Pressing eject now makes a cool "Click-woosh" sound as the tray pops out.
I am happy with it.

PROBLEM 2:
The following are error messages I have recevied on my XPS2 less than a week old. I have received them several times. All upon startup, I think some if not all at wake up from hibernate.

Blue screen:
*** Hardware Malfunction ***
call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The System has halted ***

Blue screen:
I/O card parity interrupt at F000:AFE6
Type (S)hut off NMI, (R)eboot, other keys to continue.

Black screen:
The last attempt to restart the System from its previous location failed.
Attempt to restart again?

Delete restoration data and proceed to system
Continute with system restart

I believe (not 100%) these issues occurr upon startup after the system has hibernated due to Inactivity.

Also sometimes after it boots I get a message "New Hardware Found" and the hardware wizzard pops up. If I go to the Device manager I see these.
After rebooting the Exclimations go away.

If these exclimations are present and I try to hibernate I get an error message stating something like "A Device is preventing System Hibernate. OK"

Through tech support we ran the Dell hardware diagonstics program from hte CD that has XPS2 drivers and utilities on it. All tests passed. Tech Support guy figured it had to be software. We went throught msconfig and removed just about everything non microsoft startup to see if that woudl help. Today I had the same problem again. (But my 3Dmark score is now 5084 with stock drivers)

Can someone let their machine enter hibernte through Idle time out and verify theirs works correctly?
Settings under Display Properties->Screen Saver->Power

Anyone have any ideas?

My Burner was sticky opening, had errors reading, and was NOISEY! Removed it, re-installed....all has been fine ever since. I think they have some real bozo's installing these drives!
Sounds like yer motherboard's toast Daddy-O...almost as if someone forgot to install the chipset drivers...Those things that it's naming are motherboard resources, right? Someone who knows better correct me here if I'm wrong, but you might try reinstalling the Intel Chipset Drivers from Dell's Support site...can't hurt, really...

Then again, if all motherboard resources were toast, you wouldn't have any USB ports either, as I'm pretty sure those are also installed with the Chipset Drivers...arrggh!!

If that fails, the only option left this side of a return is to obliterate all partitions and reinstall WinXP...if that crap still shows up, then Dell's Diagnostic crap is simply WRONG, and some part of your motherboard is damaged...

It seems that all the devices that are having errors are located on the right side of the machine as pictured here.

PCMCIA
Secure Digital (tiny flash drive)
IEEE 1394 (firewire)

Maybe they are loose?
I sent an e-mail to dell tech support well see what they come up with.

After windoes does its Hardware detection wizzard the error messages do go away after a reboot. That is untill I boot at a later time when they come back.

Update:

I had some of the Alerts you see in the Device Manager.
I righclicked on my computer name
and clicked "Scan for hardware changes"
Immediatly i got a the blue screen of death with white text reading an error message i had received several times earlier upon boot:

*** Hardware Malfunction ***
call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The System has halted ***

Then I held down the power button for 5 seconds to power off (only thing i could do) and pressed it once to power back up again.
I received another blue screen of death this message:

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

The BIOS in the system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please contact your
system vendor of visit http://www.hardware-update.com for an updated BIOS.
IF you are unable to obtain an updated BIOS or the latest BIOS supplied by
your vendor is not ACPI compliant, you can turn off ACPI mode durring text
mode setup. To do this, simply press the F7 key when you are prompted to
install storage drivers. The system will not notify you that the F76 key
was pressed - it will silently disable ACPI and all you to continue your installation.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000A5 (0x00010007, 0x00000038, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I powered off again and it booted to windowes properly. With no exclimations in device manager or new hardware found messages.

Do you know how to reformat and reinstall windows? I cannot imagine what horrid thing has gone wrong, but if you do the Big Wipe and it still persists, it is a SURE sign that your hardware is malfunctioning, and you should definitely have them cross-ship you a replacement...scalp the screen off your current machine if it's better; otherwise, just pack the whole thing up and send it back...

I do know how to format and reinstall. Infact I want repartition and have 3 partitons partition with XP MCE, XP Pro and Linux, but they did not send the XP MCE disks in the box. On friday when I talk to tech support about the DVD drive he said he was going to send me the disks. I dont have a tracking number or any way of knowing when they will get here.

Go online and check your service call status under "my systems." They usually include the tracking number in the service call info.
Do a reinstall. As it was said before, this will prove whether it's a hardware or software problem.
it seems to be a collective problem then i have those problems too, not the hibernation thing, but i do get the acpi compliant error, i get the memory parity error, and when loading diagnostics it freezes at ieee 1394.mdm meaning it might have something to do with the firewire port, still daddy, you should just call dell and get a replacement sent to ya, thats what they did with me, i got another xps2 on the way(with a samsung screen , so i can compare) and the rep even told me to swap or get a tech support guy to swap pieces between machines so i get exactly what i want(they are both configured the same, but lets say ilike the samsung screen, but like the keyboard better on the 1 i have now, i could tell or switch myself the keyborads and stay with the one i like more.
and by the way, a reinstall doesnt fix it, a bios flash doesnt help either, i reseated the memory too and even checked for static electricity(seems to be a dell procedure to check for static), i couldnt get the dell diagnostics to run, ever.

I think the memory is shot.

Ditto, but also maybe the motherboard is shot by the other hardware problems mentioned. I'd order memory replacement, try that out, then don't hesitate to request a new laptop.
I would have the laptop replaced or at least have a tech come look at it. You have put your time in!

My guess: MB

There is nothing in the column of Active Service Calls for my XPS2.
So i dont know when the XP MCE disks will arrive. If ever.

I have not received a response from tech support e-mail yet. Hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow. I plan to spend several hours tomorrow night on the phone with dell to get this thing figured out.

It would be nice for them to send me another XPS2 with Samsung screen so I could compare.

The sad part is that i spent about 6 hours time installing all the development studio applications for me to do my work on it (I have two daughters and I am gone 11+ hours a day to begin with. Ill have to do that all over again. That’s why i said in another thread that Maybe I would try the Sony A600 series. If its more stable its worth it.
I do love everything else about this machine except screen (8 of 10, but I have seen the 10) and technical issues. So I would probably end up returning that one.
I wish I could be done worring and just
start enjoying my new eXtreme Performance System.

you might be able to just swap the hard drives when you get the replacement.

I've had the same thing as you with the `NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error`. hrm. if I get it again, well, I guess me and the giant mr. dell will have a talk.

Yes i could do that. But i guess i was unclear of my reasons. I do plan to reinstall to repartition. But i dont want to start down a path that woudl require me to install several times on several different notebooks. I want a stable one yesterday. I like mine. I would prefer to keep it if we discover its a hardware problem on something like memory that can be just swapped out eaisily. Otherwise I want a new laptop. Above all i need stability.

I have been havin this same parity memory error on boot ups, and I am also working off of a fresh install. Also, I have aftermarket ram and the dell ram, and the error occured first while the aftermarket ram was in the machine, and then when I put the dell memory back in it did the same exact thing. So I am guessin it isnt the memory. To fix it, I reverted back to the last known working settings while the dell memory was in the system. It loaded up, so I took the memory back out, put my kingston memory back in, and it loaded up as well. I dunno what the heck is goin on. My guess is a bios problem.

edit: btw, I do not have hibernation enabled.

Well, i am not sure if i should feel better that I am not the only one or worse.
I have removed the RAM and reinserted just to make sure they were not loose. My boss's boss is presenting our current project to the board or directors on tuesday, so I dont have time to play with it today. Tonight Ill call tech support again.

The following is an e-mail respons from Tech Support.
Since the problem is intermittient I am not sure how conclusive
any of the tests they suggest will be.

Sorry its so long but I wanted to give out all the data incase it helps someone or sparks an idea to the problem in someones head.

Dear XXX XXX,

I appreciate the opportunity to assist you in order to resolve the
situation. As I understand the issue correctly, it seems that the issue
is with the Parity Check error. I would request you to perform the
following trouble shooting steps:

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a hardware component malfunctions, or if
there are damaged or incompatible drivers installed.

RESOLUTION
To try to resolve this behavior, use the following troubleshooting
techniques. Because Windows can display only basic error messages when
hardware malfunctions occur, troubleshooting can be difficult. Most
equipment problems center around the motherboard, the RAM on a
motherboard or on an adapter, or the cache memory on a motherboard or on
an adapter.

To troubleshoot basic hardware problems, try one or more of the
following:

Check the Memory

Remove any extra memory modules that are in the computer, leaving only
the least amount that is required for the computer to start and run
Windows. Restart the computer to see whether the error messages persist.

If the error does not reappear, the issue is isolated to one or more of
the RAM modules that you removed from the computer. Continue to remove
and replace the minimum amount of RAM required, using the memory modules
that you removed. When the error returns, you have isolated the
individual memory module that is responsible for the problem.

This process may require you to restart your computer several times to
pinpoint the specific memory module that is not working correctly.

Or take out the memory module(s) and put one module ( If the system is
having more than one memory module ) in the any of the two memory
sockets . Then restart the system , verify whether the issue persists.
Again put the same memory module in the other socket and verify whether
the problem is there . If not then please take out the first memory
module from the system and put the other memory module in any of the
memory socket and repeat the same procedure as that of the first memory
module. Please let me know the exact results for further troubleshooting
to get the issue resolved .

Also attach a know good memory module from some other system and verify
whether the issue persists with the known good memory module .

Microsoft has released a software memory diagnostic tool, Windows Memory
Diagnostic. Windows Memory Diagnostic tests the Random Access Memory
(RAM) on your computer for errors. To download this tool, visit the
following Microsoft Web site:

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Check the Adapters

Remove any Ac adapters that are not required to start the computer and
run Windows. In many cases, you can start your computer with only the
drive subsystem controller and the video adapter.

If the error message does not appear, one of the adapters that you
removed is the source of the problem. Reinstall each adapter separately,
restarting after each adapter is installed, to see whether the error
returns. If the error does not return after you reinsert all of the
adapters, it is possible that one of the adapter cards just needed to be
reseated. After your computer is running again, monitor the computer to
make sure that the error does not return.

Solution

If reseating the adapters does not solve the problem, replace the
adapter that is causing the error.
Check the Computer BIOS/Configuration. Restart your system and once you
see the Dell logo press F2 key continuously to enter the BIOS.

Verify that you have installed the latest revisions for your computer's
BIOS or firmware configuration software. Go into the BIOS and set load
Fail-safe defaults or BIOS defaults, disable any antivirus protection in
the BIOS, and then set Plug and Play OS to No.

Download the latest BIOS version with the help of link given below:

http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=123191

The type of hardware that your computer uses and the design of the
motherboard determine what part of your computer's firmware can actually
be updated. Various manufacturers provide diagnostic tools for
troubleshooting.

If none of these procedures isolates or resolves the issue, the problem
can be narrowed down to the motherboard, drive subsystem controller,
hard drive, or the video adapter. Advanced RAID or other caching
controllers can have RAM, processor chips, or both that could also be
the problem. If the simplest configuration contains one of these
advanced adapters, resolving the problem may require use of additional
troubleshooting or diagnostic software, possibly using duplicate
hardware.

Check For Updated Drivers

write back to me.
